Fiala government approves plan to close down 300 branches of Czech Post

The Fiala government has approved a proposal to close down 300 branches of Czech Post within extensive cost-cutting measures. The state owned company has suffered heavy losses due to a sharp decline in demand for postal services.

The plans have raised concern among elderly people living in small villages whose branch is due to close. It has been severely criticized by mayors and governors who say Czech Post did not consult them about which outlets would be closed down. Further negotiations are expected to take place as regards the branches slated for abolition, but the overall number is not negotiable.
