Warning Czech shift from coal could cause power shortages

If Czechia ceases to produce energy from coal by 2030 it will become dependent on expensive and risky imports of electricity from other countries, according to national grid operator ČEPS. It said on Wednesday that in certain circumstances the country could even face a shortage of electricity.

ČEPS officials said that Czechia would not be able to do without the construction of more nuclear power sources and would also require mechanisms for the support of flexible energy sources.

In its policy programme, the current Czech government said it aimed to phase out coal in energy production by 2033.
