EU leaders discuss separation of gas and electricity prices at Prague summit

EU leaders took part in an informal summit at Prague Castle on Friday. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said in his speech at a press conference after the summit that proposals to separate the price of gas from the price of electricity, as well as releasing emission allowances from the reserve fund, were discussed as possible measures to lower energy prices. Mr. Fiala said that separating electricity and gas prices would mean a reduction in the price of electricity for all companies and households in the EU.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said in her speech that 41 percent of European gas came from Russia at the start of the war in Ukraine, and now it is down to 7.5 percent.

The next EU council meeting will take place in two weeks' time in Brussels.
