Developer of revolutionary microscope Petráň dies at 99

The Czech scientist Mojmír Petráň died on Saturday at the age of 99, the country’s Learned Society, of which he was a member, said.

In the 1960s Mr. Petráň and a colleague, Milan Hadravský, developed a revolutionary new type of microscope – which they patented in the United States in 1967 – that made a major contribution to a boom in molecular cell biology.

Mr. Petráň was also a member of the resistance during the Nazi occupation.
