First case of BA.2.76 sub-variant of Covid-19 detected in Czechia
The first case of the BA.2.76 sub-variant of Covid-19 has been detected in Czechia, the State Health Institute confirmed on Monday. Medical experts have flagged the BA.2.75 sub-variant, which first appeared in India, for special attention, due to certain mutations that let it dodge antibodies and attach itself better to human cells. This means that it has an increased ability to infect people who have been infected before, as well as those who are vaccinated.
A summer wave of Covid-19 is nearing its peak in Czechia. According to statistics, 96 percent of infections are the Omicron sub-variants BA.5 or BA.4 which are presently dominant in Europe.
