Jindřichův Hradec

The largest tourist attraction of the South Bohemian city of Jindřichův Hradec is its historical centre which is cornered on one side by the Nežárka River and on the other by the Vajgar artificial lake.

The true jewel of the city is the large castle with its arcades, garden and renaissance roundel. It also features the famous Black Tower, a dungeon and the so-called “black kitchen”, where the White Lady, a ghost prominent in Czech mythology, apparently used to cook porridge for the poor. Those who love such legends may also be interested in the scary night tours that the castle organises.

Another interesting building is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, through whose corner the 15th meridian of east longitude passes through. It is marked on the pavement, so visitors can set the exact Central European time on their watches there. Two narrow-gauge railways lead from Jindřichov Hradec to the picturesque nearby settlements of Nová Bystřice and Obrataň.
