Statics show number of pig slaughters declining in Czechia

The number of “zabijačky”, the traditional pig slaughters carried out at a farmer’s home with the help of a butcher, have declined over the past 10 years from 125,000 to just 93,000, the regional daily Deník reported on Wednesday citing a statistic from the Ministry of Agriculture.

The most likely causes behind the decline are cheaper pork imports from abroad, a lack of butchers and general changes in countryside life, Deník writes. Czech butchers are hoping that the phenomenon could be reversed by extending domestic meat processing; something that they argue would also make meat cheaper for the consumer.
