Wednesday saw number of new Covid cases fall, but hospitalisations still rising

A total of 18,004 people tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday, a decrease of more than 7,000 compared to the previous day, according to data from the Ministry of Health. However, hospitalisations rose by more than 200 to 5,886 with the number of patients in serious condition approaching 850. Close to 72 percent of ICU units in the country are currently in use, with 1,090 beds remaining unoccupied.

Meanwhile the incidence rate for the past week lies at 1,097 cases. Olomouc and Zlín remain the most affected regions in the country; with Karlovy Vary still the safest at an incidence rate of just 419 cases per 100,000 people.

So far, 32,523 people have died from COVID-19 since the beginning of the epidemic, with more than 2 million people being infected by the virus. The current number of active infections lies at 239,799.
