IEA report: Czechia must abandon coal faster than planned

The Czech Republic must do more to meet the European Union’s energy and climate targets by 2030. These stricter targets will compel the country to move away from coal more quickly than now planned, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), which has carried out an in-depth review of Czech energy policy.

The government should support people in the regions affected by this transition to a cleaner energy system in order to mitigate the economic and social consequences, the IEA said in a report.

The report, which notes that coal still accounts for almost half of the Czech Republic’s electricity production, was presented by the agency’s head, Fatih Birol, who called on Prague to make greater use of various low-carbon energy sources.
