Number of old-age pensions drops first time in two decades

The number of people receiving old-age pensions has dropped after two decades of steady growth. In 2020, the Czech Social Security Administration paid out 2.4 million pensions, about 14,400 fewer than in the previous year. The number last fell year-on-year in 2002.

According to preliminary Czech Statistical Office data, the number of deaths increased significantly last year among older people, especially in the autumn months after the onset of further waves of the coronavirus pandemic.
