Opposition parties want PM to ask lower house for confidence vote
The political alliance of Civic Democrats, Christian Democrats and TOP 09, formed for the upcoming general elections, has called on Prime Minister Andrej Babiš to ask the lower house for a confidence vote in his minority government. Civic Democrat leader Petr Fiala says that if he does not do so within the space of a week the opposition parties will try to rally support for a vote of no confidence in his government. The prime minister is refusing to comply.
The move comes shortly after the Communist Party officially announced it was withdrawing its support for the minority government of ANO and Social Democrats because it was dissatisfied with its performance. The opposition grouping has also floated the possibility of dissolving the lower house and opening the way for early elections, for which it would need 120 votes in the 200-member lower chamber.
