Tennis - Australian Open: Kvitová out, Vondroušová qualifies for third round
Petra Kvitová was has been knocked out of the Australian Open tennis tournament, the first Grand Slam of the season. The two-time Wimbledon winner, seeded no. 9 in the event, was defeated on Wednesday by the Romanian Sorana Cirstea, ranked no. 68 in the world, in three sets (4- 6, 6-1, 1-6).
Kvitová’s compatriot Markéta Vondroušová has fared better: she won her second round match against the Canadian Rebecca Marino (6-1, 7-5) and thus made it into the third round, a personal professional best.
Three more Czech women remain in the contest, including world no. 6 Karolína Plíšková, who will face the American Danielle Collins on the centre court on Thursday.
