Czech PM calls for radical reform of UN into transparent and effective organization

Addressing the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš called for a reform of the UN towards a more effective and transparent organization.

The prime minister said the coronavirus pandemic had revealed systemic limitations and weaknesses of the international community in addressing a global threat of such proportions.

Mr. Babiš said the World Health Organization had failed to exercise global health leadership in the face of the crisis, giving confusing recommendations that failed to help governments tackle the pandemic.

He said the health crisis presented an opportunity for substantial reform and the creation of a mechanism that would enable coordinated and effective action in the event of need.

The Czech Republic was ready to support and actively contribute to such reform, the Czech prime minister concluded.
