People pay last respects to Oscar-winning director Jiří Menzel
A memorial event for the Oscar-winning Czech film director Jiří Menzel, who died last weekend at the age of 82, is being held at Prague's Rudolfinum. A book of condolences will be available for the public to sign between 10 am and 6 pm. There is also an exhibition related to his much-loved film Capricious Summer in the park outside the building.
Jiří Menzel was one of the leading figures of the Czech New Wave, alongside directors such as Miloš Forman and Věra Chytilová. He won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968 with Closely Watched Trains, a World War II drama based on a novel by the Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal.
