In today's Mailbox: listeners' feedback from Ireland, Ukraine, Russia and Brazil. Listeners quoted: Jonathan Murphy, Nadezhda Novikova, Anna Mihlyaeva, Rodrigo de Araujo.

Hello and welcome to Radio Prague’s Mailbox. We are very happy that so many of our long time shortwave listeners have not deserted us after Radio Prague’s switch to internet broadcasting. Among those who have remained faithful to us is Jonathan Murphy from Ireland who resided in Poland in recent months:

“While in Poland I tuned into Radio Prague via your website as I did not have my shortwave radio with me. So in a way I made the switch to listening online before you ended transmissions at the end of 2010. I thought it was very fitting that you had a programme looking at Radio Prague on shortwave during your final transmission. I am happy that you will continue to send out QSL cards, they are a lovely link with the station and the Czech Republic. Indeed, my collections from 1997 onwards have been the inspiration behind past and future visits to your country.

“I am very happy to have Radio Prague on the internet as a radio station with audio reports. It continues to be an important link with your country and the source of ideas for a fourth visit in the not too distant future.”

It is lovely to hear that Radio Prague broadcasts inspire our listeners to come and visit the Czech Republic. As far as QSL cards that Jonathan mentioned – you can still send us your reception reports, there is an updated form on our website. Just click on “Confirmation of Reception” on the right-hand side of our homepage and the form pops up. If you fill it in, specifying how you listen to our broadcasts, we will verify your report with a QSL card. The 2011 series features castles and chateaux of the Czech Republic.

We are also happy to see the number of listeners in Russia and Ukraine increasing. Among them is Nadezhda Novikova from Ukraine:

“My family: me, my husband and our three children, Nikita, Lena and Veronika, we are from Ukraine. We have great pleasure to listen to your Radio over the internet. Thank you so much for the professional work.”

And Anna Mihlyaeva writes from Russia:

“My name is Anna, I am the biggest fan of your radio station, I listen to you online. You can always learn new things and listen to great music. And it really helps me in learning the language, because what I read in textbooks is not a normal speech, and your radio is giving me this opportunity, it is important to me and I want to thank you for what you do.”

And thank you for listening and letting us know you are out there. From the other side of the globe, Rodrigo de Araujo from Brazil sent us this:

“I feel integrated into the family of Český rozhlas broadcasting every time I receive a letter from you. I write to thank you for the brochure on tourism in the Czech Republic. It has served to further whet my childhood desire to come to this country. Hopefully I'll do it, when I can save enough money… This unique relationship with the listeners of this radio station makes me very happy and I certainly will try to schedule a visit to the studio of the Radio Praha when I visit the Czech Republic.

“I'm learning more every day about the wonderful culture of this country through the memorable and cultural news broadcasts.

“I got from my brother-in-law last Christmas a very fragrant drink, made in Karlovy Vary, called Becherovka. I had never heard of it before. I really enjoyed the drink and I'm waiting for the Brazilian winter, so I will be able to drink it with the environment more conducive.”

Some lovely listeners’ letters this time but you are welcome to send us any comments or questions regarding our broadcasts. And while you’re at it, you might as well give our listeners’ competition a try.

In March we are looking for the name of the inventor of the printing method of lithography who was born in Prague in 1771.

If you send us the name of this person by the end of March, your answer will be included in a lucky draw and the winner will get a Radio Prague goodie bag. The address for your answers, reception reports, queries, comments and complaints remains as always [email protected] or Radio Prague, 12099 Prague. I’ll be back with a new edition of Mailbox again on April 2nd. Until then, stay with Radio Prague.
