V4 leaders meet in Warsaw to discuss Brexit
Legal position of EU citizens in Britain and financial obligations of Great Britain towards EU countries will be among the V4 priorities in negotiations over Brexit, prime ministers of the Visegrad Four countries agreed at a meeting in Warsaw on Tuesday. The leaders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland repeatedly rejected the idea of cutting funds to countries that refuse to take migrants. The V4 prime ministers are also scheduled to take part in an international Innovators Summit being held in the Polish capital and sign a so-called “pact for innovation”.
Record number of Czechs happy with state of democracy: poll
Three fifths of Czechs are happy with the way democracy is functioning in their country, which is the best result since 2004, according to a poll conducted by the CVVM agency and released on Tuesday. Some 60 percent of those polled said they were happy with the way democracy operates in the Czech Republic, a four-percentage point increase on last years’ figures. Nearly 50 percent of respondents said they thought democracy was the best form of government.
Bullied teacher awarded in memoriam
Education Minister Kateřina Valachová has awarded in memoriam a teacher from a secondary school in Prague’s Malešice district, who died last year after being bullied by her students for several months. The case made national headlines after a video of the bullied teacher was leaked to the Internet. The minister said she was determined to tackle the problem and contribute to a safer environment in schools. Another 44 teachers were awarded at the ceremony in the Senate on Tuesday, which marked international teacher’s day.
Tomáš Rosický undergoes operation and hopes for Sparta Prague comeback
Czech midfield star Tomáš Rosický has undergone an operation on his Achilles heel in a bid to make a last comeback. The operation took place on Monday. The former Czech and Arsenal midfielder returned to Sparta Prague in August but played for just 19 minutes due to injury. The 36 year old will be out for the rest of the season but says he hopes to play next season for Sparta.
Czech Hyundai workers to get 12-percent pay rise
Employees of the second-biggest carmaker in the Czech Republic, Huyndai, will get a pay rise of around 12 percent, the company’s spokesman Petr Vaněk told the Czech News Agency on Tuesday. The deal is part of a collective agreement signed by the unions and representatives of the company’s management. Last year, blue collar workers in Hyundai made on average 34,500 crowns. The average wage in the Moravian-Silesian region, where the plant is located, was around 25,200 crowns last year.
Tennis: Plíšková through to Miami Open quarterfinals
In tennis, Czech second seed Karolína Plíšková is through to the quarterfinals of the Miami Open tournament after beating compatriot Barbora Strýcova 6-1 6-4. Lucie Šafářová, the former Czech No 5, beat Slovakian fourth seed Dominika Cibulková 7-6, 6-1 to reach the last eight.
