Czech team bringing in medals

It's been a weekend of mostly good fortune for the Czechs on the international stage. All expect tennis, that is.

Czech tennis player Kveta Hrdlickova succumbed in straight sets to American Lindsay Davenport, 6-1 6-1, in the semi-final of the women's tennis tournament in Linz in Austria on Saturday. Davenport was never really in trouble against Hrdlickova, and went on to beat fellow American Venus Williams in the final, which may or may not be of some consolation to Miss Hrdlickova.

On to the good news now, and the Czech team have picked up quite a few medals at the Paralympics in Sydney. Cyclist Jiri Jezek got the Czechs off to a flying start on Thursday with the first medal, and a gold one at that, winning the one-kilometre race in one minute eleven seconds.

The next gold was added to the list on Friday, with mentally handicapped swimmer Ivana Kumpostova winning the fifty metres breaststroke and setting a new Paralympics record of 37.11 seconds to boot. Fellow swimmer Katerina Coufalova also won't be going home empty-handed, taking a bronze in the 200 metres freestyle.

Out on the track, the Czechs were also doing well for themselves, with a silver medal for quadriplegic Martina Kniezkova, in the javelin throwing event. Any disappointment Miss Kniezkova may have felt at coming second was no doubt removed when she took the gold medal in the discus event. Milan Kubal, the oldest member of the Czech team, took the gold medal for the men's discus. With two silvers and bronze taken in the table tennis events, the Czechs can certainly be pleased with the medals picked up by their team so far.
