A new opinion poll puts the opposition Social Democrats eight points ahead of the Civic Democrats, the largest party in the governing coalition. The survey, conducted by the Median agency in July, suggests that the Social Democrats have the support of 37.7 percent of the electorate, with the Civic Democrats on 29.4 percent. The preferences of the Social Democrats have increased by two percent since June. The Communists would be elected by 14.6 percent of votes. The five-percent threshold to enter the lower house would also be crossed by the Greens and the Christian Democrats, with 7.1 and six percent respectively.

All Czech citizens who want to leave Georgia due to the outbreak of war in the region will leave the country on Monday, according to the Czech Ambassador in Georgia Ivan Jestřáb. Around 40 Czechs are believed to remain in the country. A group of thirty Czechs have already been evacuated to the neighbouring Armenia. Seven of them landed in the Polish capital Warsaw on Monday morning.

Revenues from the sale of free carbon credits will go to the Czech Environment Fund, under an amendment signed by President Václav Klaus on Monday. The funds are to be spent on activities aimed at reducing greenhouse emissions. The Czech Republic will not use all carbon credits it was allocated due to a significant decrease of emissions in the 1990s. Environment Minister Martin Bursík previously said that the Czech Republic could get 20 to 30 billion crowns for the carbon credits.

Czech Patients’ Association wants to completely abolish healthcare fees and cover all treatment from public health insurance, according to its healthcare reform presented on Monday. As part of the recent government’s healthcare reform package, patients have been obliged since January to pay 30 crowns (nearly 2 USD) per visit to the doctor, and 60 crowns per day spent in hospital. The Patients’ Association says the reform violates the constitution that guarantees free health care for everyone. The governing coalition has already exempt newborns, organ donors and those legally ordered to undergo treatment from paying the fees.

The US coffee-shop chain Starbucks is set to open new branches outside of Prague, the daily Lidové Noviny reported, citing the company’s operational director for Central and Eastern Europe. The company also plans to expand in the capital within the next six months. The Czech Republic’s first Starbucks opened on Prague’s Malostranské náměstí in January of this year. Currently there are four Starbucks cafés in the city.

Czech tennis player Lucie Šafářová has won the first round of the Olympic tournament on Monday, when she beat Estonias Maret Aniova 6:4, 6:2. Iveta Benešová and Tomáš Berdych have also made it to the second round.

Trap shooter David Kostelecký has followed on from the example set by air rifle champion Kateřina Emmons to win the Czech Republic a second gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. Mr Kostelecký hit all 25 targets in the final round on Sunday finishing with a final score of 146. The Czech shooter was the one competitor to turn in a perfect final round, despite facing heavy competition in the early rounds. The event took place amidst heavy downpours in Beijing. After the competition, an ecstatic Mr Kostelecký noted that he believed that the rain had brought him good fortune.

The Czech Foreign Ministry has expressed concern and called for an end to hostilities in the Georgian region of South Ossetia. In a press release, the Foreign Ministry stated that the Czech Republic fully supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia and expressed regret that Russia had in its view become a party to a conflict as a result of its military steps against Georgia. Around 50 Czechs are believed to be in the region, and the Foreign Ministry has also stated that it is prepared to send a plane to bring its nationals home.

The final two victims of the Czech Republic’s worst train crash in 13 years have been identified. Of a total of seven people killed in Friday’s crash near the Czech city of Ostrava, seven were Czechs, while a Polish woman and Ukrainian man were also among the dead. According to the Czech authorities, local hospitals treated 67 people, including the Ukrainian victim, two Frenchmen, two Slovaks and 13 Poles. Meanwhile, Czech Railways has restored a limited service along the track adjacent to the one on which the accident took place. Czech Railways have also announced that the closest relative of each of the victims will receive 240,000 crowns in compensation.

Two people have died following the crash of a light aircraft near the Czech town of Dolní Třebonín. According to witnesses, the plane, which started its journey early on Sunday near the Czech city of České Budějovice, ran into difficulties at around 9am. Both the pilot and the passenger were killed when the plane crashed into a field. Upon crashing, the plane burst into flames, with fire-fighters putting out the blaze some time later. The pilot is believed to be a 31-year-old Czech man, while the identity of the passenger has yet to be confirmed. The incident follows on the heels of a similar crash – in which there were no casualties - on 31 July.
