MPs in the lower house on Thursday condemned animal cruelty, calling for a thorough investigation of such incidents and adequate punishment of perpetrators.
The draft resolution was initiated in response to a shocking case of cat abuse when teenagers allegedly placed the animal in a tumble dryer for amusement and recorded the incident on their mobile phones.
The governing coalition wants to increase penalties for animal abuse so that they reflect the severity of the suffering inflicted. MPs pointed out that tolerance of violence against animals may lead to other forms of aggressive and antisocial behaviour.

Prague will introduce the position of an Ombudsman to handle residents’ complaints concerning public space. City councillors approved the move on Thursday after lengthy debate over a petition criticising the city’s approach to replacing public lighting.
They also agreed that Prague City Hall would update its public lighting strategy. A working group will be established, bringing together representatives of the city, its organisations and experts from relevant fields.
The ongoing replacement of city lighting will continue using fixtures with slightly warmer light, though not to the extent demanded by petitioners. According to the authors of the petition, light with a higher proportion of blue light is harmful and disrupts the daily rhythms of people, animals and plants.

Consumer prices in the Czech Republic rose by 1.6 percent year on year in January, the slowest growth since November 2016, the Czech Statistics Office said on Friday, confirming its preliminary estimate.
Inflation eased from 2.1 percent in December, mainly due to the transfer of renewable energy payments from consumers to the state. Month on month, prices increased by 0.9 percent, driven primarily by higher food, beverage and tobacco costs.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has again expressed concern over the price of EU emissions allowances and the way they are traded. Speaking to reporters after an informal European Union summit at Alden Biesen castle in Belgium, he said he had brought up the issue four times during the day and would continue to push for changes to the system.
The Czech position calling for changes to the ETS1 system is supported by Italy, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary. According to Babiš, the problem also lies in the absence of a unified European energy market.
He said he plans to send another letter to EU leaders outlining the Czech proposal in more detail.

Bird flu has been confirmed in several dead birds at Prague Zoo, the State Veterinary Administration said.
Inspectors detected the infection after the zoo reported the deaths of several birds in different enclosures.
Veterinary authorities, in cooperation with the zoo, are set to introduce extraordinary measures aimed at preventing the further spread of the disease.

The Czech men’s ice hockey team opened their Olympic campaign in Milan with a 5:0 loss to Canada.
Canadian forward Macklin Celebrini scored the first goal just six seconds before the end of the first period. Tournament favorites Canada extended their lead in the 27th minute through Mark Stone, before Bo Horvat raised the score to 3:0 minutes later with an impressive individual effort.
Canada also capitalized on a power play in the 48th minute, with Nathan MacKinnon adding another goal to seal a dominant performance against the Czech team.
The next opponents for coach Radim Rulík’s side in Group A will be France, who fell 4:0 to Switzerland earlier on Thursday.

Czechia’s legendary speed skater Martina Sáblíková’s hopes of securing a medal in what will likely be her last Winter Olympics were dashed on Thursday as she placed 11th in the 5,000 meters race, her favourite discipline.
The gold went to Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida, who edged out Dutch skater Merel Conijn by just one tenth of a second in a tightly contested finish.
Sáblíková, a two-time Olympic champion in the 5,000 meters race, was hampered by illness that had already forced her to withdraw from the 3,000 meters earlier in the competition.

President Petr Pavel is the most trusted politician in the Czech Republic, with 62 percent of people expressing confidence in him, according to a new survey by the Public Opinion Research Centre, CVVM, published on Thursday. He is followed by Health Minister Adam Vojtěch with 50 percent and Industry Minister Karel Havlíček with 44 percent.
At the other end of the ranking is government commissioner for climate policy and the Green Deal Filip Turek, who is distrusted by 70 percent of respondents. Two-thirds said they do not trust lower house speaker Tomio Okamura, and six in ten expressed distrust in Foreign Minister Petr Macinka.
The survey was conducted between January 23 and February 3 among 1,725 respondents aged 15 and over.

Ester Ledecká did not finish the women’s Super-G at the Olympic Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, and just as in snowboarding, her bid for a medal on skis also came up short.
The race proved extremely demanding, with many skiers failing to reach the finish due to the course’s difficulty. The sensational Super-G champion from the previous Winter Olympics in PyeongChang attacked her run aggressively but made a mistake in the final section and crashed. She later got back on her feet, skied down to the finish area, and signaled that she was unhurt.
Gold went to Italy’s Federica Brignone, who triumphed at 35, just ten months after a complicated leg fracture. Another Czech skier, Barbora Nováková, capitalized on a number of retirements to secure a career-best 14th place finish.
