Europe must stop relying on the United States to always come to its aid and should stand on its own two feet in terms of defence, Czech President Petr Pavel said on Saturday in a debate programme on Nova TV.

According to Pavel, Europe needs to become an equal partner to the US—one capable of addressing and resolving its own security challenges.

He noted that US President Donald Trump has made it clear he views the Western Hemisphere, which does not include Europe, as central to US security interests, underscoring the need for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own defence.

Dozens of people gathered at the entrance to Prague’s Charles Bridge today to mark Ukraine’s Unity Day. Before crossing the bridge with a large Ukrainian flag, participants listened to the Ukrainian and Czech national anthems and observed a minute of silence for all those killed in the war.

Ukraine’s ambassador to the Czech Republic, Vasyl Zvarych, thanked Czechs for their solidarity and highlighted recent fundraising efforts that have raised millions of crowns for generators, as Ukraine continues to face attacks on its critical infrastructure.

Ukraine marks Unity Day on January 22, commemorating the 1919 declaration that united the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has been re-elected leader of the ANO party at its congress in Prague. Babiš, who has headed the movement since its founding, ran unopposed and received backing from 196 of the 209 delegates.

Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlíček also retained his position as first vice-chair. Finance Minister Alena Schillerová continues as one of ANO’s vice-chairs, alongside Radek Vondráček, Robert Králíček and Richard Brabec.

Speaking at the congress, Babiš said the governing coalition of ANO, the SPD and the Motorists party should nominate a joint candidate for the 2028 presidential election. He added that debate over a possible nominee should begin a year earlier, in 2027.

ANO won last year’s parliamentary elections by a wide margin and currently governs in coalition with the SPD and the Motorists party.

The women’s Alpine skiing World Cup event in Špindlerův Mlýn in the Krkonoše Mountains opened on Saturday with a giant slalom victory for Sweden’s Sara Hector and concludes on Sunday.

The Olympic champion confirmed her first-run lead and won by 0.18 seconds ahead of American Paula Moltzan. Overall World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States finished third, a further 0.05 seconds back, returning to the giant slalom podium for the first time in two years.

The Czech representatives Adriana Jelínková and Tereza Koutná both failed to qualify for the second run.

The Špindlerův Mlýn races are the final technical World Cup events before the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Jelínková is the only Czech skier entered in both Saturday’s giant slalom and Sunday’s slalom.

Because of the World Cup races, the black slope in the Svatý Petr area is closed, while other slopes remain open to recreational skiers.

President Petr Pavel has confirmed that he will seek re-election if he feels sufficient support and public interest, provided his health or that of a family member does not prevent him from doing so. The president made the comments to journalists during a visit to Prostějov on Friday.

Petr Pavel was elected president in a direct vote in January 2023, defeating ANO leader Andrej Babiš in the second round. He took office in March 2023 and is serving a five-year term. Under the constitution, no one may be elected president more than twice consecutively.

Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka confirmed President Petr Pavel’s statement that providing four L-159 aircraft to Ukraine would not endanger the Czech Republic’s security and that the army is prepared for such a step. He noted that a potential transfer of the aircraft is not decided by the military, with the final decision resting with the government.

Řehka said that he wanted to clarify possible misunderstandings regarding the military’s earlier recommendations. When Ukraine requested the jets in August last year, the army said it could provide up to four aircraft, while warning of issues related to their service life and the availability of spare parts. He said that given the urgency of the present day situation, the jets could be transferred, if Ukraine accepted their limitations.

According to Řehka, the president and other politicians were informed of these positions. He said he had not discussed the matter with the prime minister or the current defence minister.

The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary should persuade Poland to return to the Visegrád Group (V4), Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said in an interview with the Hungarian right-wing website Mandiner.

Cooperation within the V4 has weakened in recent years due to differing views among its members on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and on relations with Moscow. Despite divergent positions on the war in Ukraine, Babiš said it is necessary to focus on European issues where Central European countries share common interests.
