Czech car-maker Škoda increased its global sales by 2.5 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of this year to 228,100 vehicles, the parent company Volkswagen announced on Wednesday. Sales for the entire Volkswagen Group fell 3.8 percent year-on-year to 2.243 million vehicles in the second quarter.
Škoda’s best-selling battery electric car was the Enyaq. The carmaker delivered 29,400 units of this model globally. It is also the fourth best-selling electric vehicle in the entire Volkswagen Group.

Air traffic over Czech territory still hasn’t reached pre-Covid levels, according to newly published figures by the Czech Air Traffic Control services provider. The number of take-offs, landings, and flyover flights currently reaches 93 percent of the figure recorded in 2019, while the European average is 99 percent.
According to a spokesperson for Czech Air Traffic Control, the intensity of Czech air traffic is not expected to increase significantly in the near future due to the lack of aircraft. He also says Czechia is lagging behind due to changes in aircraft routes in connection with the war in Ukraine.

The Senate on Wednesady approved an amendment to the act on social and legal protection of children that should increase the number of foster parents in Czechia.
The new legislation simplifies the process of assessing those interested in fostering and increases the state contribution for organisations that help foster parents.
The bill, which is linked to the imminent abolition of infant care facilities for children under the age of three, will still need to be signed by the president before coming into law.

Year-on-year inflation in Czechia slowed to two percent in June, down from 2.6 percent in May, according to figures released by the Czech Statistics Office on Wednesday. Month-on-month, prices fell by 0.3 percent. June's development was mainly influenced by lower growth in fuel prices and cheaper holidays and food.
Czechia improved significantly in the European inflation rankings in June. It had the 11th lowest inflation of the 41 countries surveyed, while in May it had the 23rd highest inflation, according to an analysis by investment platform Portu.

A new opinion poll by the Median agency suggests that ANO would receive 33 percent of the votes in a general election held in May. The Civic Democrats would come second with 14.5 percent, and the Pirates would be third with 10 percent voter support, the survey indicates.
Some 8.5 percent of respondents in the Median poll said they would back the Mayors and Independents and 7.5 percent would support the anti-EU Freedom and Direct Democracy party, a month-on-month drop by 2.5 percent. The TOP 09 party placed fifth on 5.5 percent.

The chair of the Czech Caucus in the US Congress, Lloyd Doggett, praised Czech aid to Ukraine during a bicameral, bipartisan meeting with Czech President Petr Pavel in Washington on Tuesday. Around 10 legislators took part in the meeting, which was held during a NATO summit.
Mr. Doggett said Czechia was one of the first countries to help Ukraine after the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. He praised the way in which the country took care of Ukrainian refugees, as well as the Czech initiative to secure artillery ammunition from outside the European Union.
For his part President Pavel recalled that his first trip to the West after the Velvet Revolution in 1989 was a visit to Washington. He also discussed the security situation in the world, which he said had become more unpredictable following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Czech MPs have passed in the first reading a bill aimed at simplifying and accelerating divorce and the process of establishing custody for children from broken marriages.
The legislation, which should take affect from next year, abolishes the requirement to establish the causes of the breakdown of a marriage and merges divorce and custody proceedings.
It also enshrines the obligation of parents to ensure that children are brought up without corporal punishment or mental suffering.
In a lower house session on Tuesday MPs also backed a bill giving greater protection to the victims of domestic violence.

The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jan Lipavský, on Tuesday summoned the Russian ambassador to Prague, Aleksandr Zmeyevsky, over Russian air strikes on Ukrainian cities. Over 40 people including four children were killed in Monday’s attacks, while nearly 200 people were injured.
Mr. Lipavský said he had told the Russian diplomat that murderers who attacked children in hospital were the dregs of humanity and that he should relay that message in Moscow.
The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country had attempted to have a representative speak about the matter at the UN Security Council on Tuesday but that this had been blocked by Russia, which is chairing that body this month.

The Czech anti-EU party Freedom and Direct Democracy is set to join the Europe of Sovereign Nations bloc at the European Parliament with Alternative for Germany, the former’s leader, Tomio Okamura, said on Tuesday.
Europe of Sovereign Nations is set to announce its foundation on Wednesday.
Most parties that were previously in the Eurosceptic and far-right Identity and Democracy bloc have now moved to the new Patriots for Europe.
ANO and the Oath and Motorists alliance from Czechia have also joined Patriots for Europe.

The major US fast food chain Wendy’s is set to enter the Czech market, the Czech News Agency reported on Tuesday. The company is planning to open 100 outlets in Europe in the next decade, it said in a news release.
Wendy’s did not specify when its first branch would open in Czechia, or where exactly it would be located, but a representative said the firm was considering the big cities, including Prague.
