• Tomio Okamura nominated to head Chamber of Deputies

    The ANO, SPD, and Motorists coalition is nominating SPD leader Tomio Okamura for the position of Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. This was confirmed by ANO deputy chairwoman Alena Schillerová after Wednesday’s coalition meeting. The Motorists will nominate their MP Jiří Barták for the position of Deputy Speaker of the Chamber, announced the party’s chairman, Petr Macinka.

  • ANO, SPD, and Motorists agree on coalition program and will present it on Monday

    Representatives of the ANO movement, SPD, and the Motorists have reached a final agreement on their coalition program. They have no disagreements and will present it on Monday, November 3. ANO’s first deputy chairman, Karel Havlíček, announced this at a press conference following Wednesday’s meeting of the three parties’ leaders.

  • Czech hockey roster for Finnish Games includes nine world champions
    10/29/2025

    The coach of the Czech national hockey team, Radim Rulík, has included nine world champions from last year’s tournament in Prague in the roster for the November Finnish Games. He announced this at Wednesday’s press conference. There are no newcomers in the lineup. The only player without national team experience is Litvínov’s Pavel Čajan, who will be available before the tournament as the third goaltender in training.

  • Ministers discuss next year’s budget

    Ministers are discussing next year’s budget at Wednesday’s government meeting, and the cabinet may submit it to the Chamber of Deputies after the lower house is constituted next week. Health Minister Vlastimil Válek (TOP 09) told journalists this upon arriving at the meeting. The head of the ANO movement and likely future prime minister, Andrej Babiš, repeatedly called on the current cabinet of Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) to resubmit the draft budget to the lower house.

  • Company KHNP held talks with 150 Czech companies about construction of Dukovany nuclear plant

    Roughly 150 Czech companies took part last week in individual meetings with the Korean company KHNP about their possible involvement in the construction of new nuclear units in Dukovany. The discussions focused mainly on the conditions of the tenders, the schedule, and the organization of the entire construction project, KHNP reported. The Korean company had previously promised that Czech firms would participate in approximately 60 percent of the project.

  • Government discusses increasing teachers’ salaries and purchase of light armored vehicles

    On Wednesday, the government of Petr Fiala (ODS) discussed a January increase of salary scales for teachers and academics by seven percent. The regulation prepared by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs also includes a raise of 2,000 crowns in the pay scales of teaching assistants and some lecturers. On top of this, the Minister of Defense presented the cabinet with information about a contract for the delivery of 24 light armored Iveco vehicles. The army has been using Iveco armored vehicles since 2008 and currently has around 200 of them.

  • Charity collection for war veterans begins on Wednesday

    A nationwide collection in support of the country’s 17,000 war veterans begins on Wednesday with the sale of red paper poppies.  The Ministry of Defence commissioned more than one hundred thousand poppy pins for the collection this year. According to the ministry’s website, they will be on sale until mid-November at selected petrol stations, bookstores, and in the streets of several cities, where soldiers will offer them directly. They will also be available at football stadiums. The charity’s online shop, Vlčí máky, operates all year round.

  • ANO leader Andrej Babiš: Coalition deal to be signed November 3

    Representatives of the emerging coalition of ANO, SPD, and the Motorists’ party have agreed on a coalition deal, which they will sign on Monday, November 3rd, the day when the new Chamber of Deputies convenes for its inaugural session, ANO leader and likely future prime minister Andrej Babiš said on X.

    In line with constitutional tradition, President Petr Pavel on Monday formally tasked Babiš with negotiating the formation of a new government. The ANO leader is expected to submit the coalition agreement and the government’s main priorities to the president in the second half of this week.

  • President Pavel honors 48 prominent personalities on Czechoslovak Independence Day

    At a ceremony marking Czechoslovak Independence Day on October 28, President Pavel handed out awards and high state distinctions to 48 leading personalities for outstanding services to the state.

    Addressing an audience of 650 guests in the historic Vladislav Hall of Prague Castle, President Pavel  emphasized the enduring values of freedom, security, and justice. He expressing gratitude for the country’s democratic and sovereign status, saying this was something to be cherished and defended at a time when many long-held certainties are fading.

    The president reiterated the importance of the Czech Republic’s membership in the European Union and NATO, warning that the weakening of transatlantic ties is a worrying development. He also highlighted the need for sufficient defense spending in view of Russia's expansionism.

    Pavel further stressed the need to protect the independence of key public institutions including the judiciary, security services, universities, and public media and said that “a confident, authentic, and evolving civil society” is vital to the nation’s future.

    Among the 48 personalities awarded high state distinctions were Oscar-winning film director  Zdeněk Svěrák, Czech-born tennis legend Martina Navrátilová and the internationally renowned Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša.

    The Medal of Merit was awarded to Martin Dorazín, Czech Radio’s war correspondent in Ukraine; Olympic canoeing champion Josef Dostál, Zuzana Baudyšová, founder of the Our Child Foundation and co-founder of the Child Helpline, Šimon Pánek, head of the humanitarian organization People in Need and one of the country’s leading actresses Anna Geislerová.

    A Medal for Bravery went to nine-year-old Šimon Malý, a fourth-grade pupil who saved his grandfather’s life by pulling him to the shore after the elderly man lost consciousness while swimming.

    Among those awarded the country’s highest state distinction in memoriam were : former justice minister and Supreme Court president Otakar Motejl, the late Czech architect Jan Kaplicky, the late Dana Němcová, Charter 77 signatory and dissident, and the late Dana Drábová the country’s leading nuclear expert and former head of the State Office for Nuclear Safety.
