Lawmakers will continue on Wednesday with deliberations on a vote of confidence in the coalition cabinet led by Andrej Babiš (ANO). According to information from government circles, the vote itself could take place in the evening. The three governing parties—ANO, SPD and the Motorists—hold a comfortable majority in the lower house, so the government is likely to win the confidence vote.
The debate on Tuesday lasted around 10 hours, with ministers and other representatives of the governing coalition taking turns speaking. Wednesday’s debate, on the other hand, opened with criticism from the opposition.
The Pirate Party's Olga Richterová highlighted several scandals linked to ANO. Christian Democrat (KDU-ČSL) leader Marek Výborný outlined why his party will not back the government, citing financial concerns. STAN leader Vít Rakušan warned the government would be weak, with the prime minister "held hostage by extremists" and the Mostorists' party.

According to former prime minister Petr Fiala (ODS), the policy statement of Andrej Babiš’s (ANO) government is hollow and contains populist promises that future generations will pay for. Fiala described Babiš’s cabinet as a government of destruction, cynicism, and selfishness. He said this today in the Chamber of Deputies as the first opposition speaker after a more than six-hour series of speeches by government representatives.

The Senate will select its two nominees for the Public Defender of Rights from six candidates put forward by senators. The nomination was unanimously confirmed today by the Senate’s electoral committee, which stated that all proposed candidates meet the requirements set by law. The candidates include the current ombudsman’s deputy, Vít Alexandr Schorm; former Government Commissioner for Human Rights Klára Šimáčková Laurenčíková; former Constitutional Court judge Jaromír Jirsa; and conservative lawyer Jakub Kříž, who was among Schorm’s rivals four years ago.

The opposition parties have submitted a motion to remove SPD leader Tomio Okamura from his post as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. Representatives of all five parties said Tuesday that it was signed by all opposition lawmakers. The motion is a response to Okamura’s anti-Ukrainian remarks from earlier this year. It is unlikely to succeed, given the governing coalition’s majority of 108 votes in the lower house of parliament.

The Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) movement will support the government in the vote of confidence, SPD leader and Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura told journalists. Lawmakers from the movement had wanted to decide on their stance toward confidence in the government only after Tuesday’s appearance by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO), who addressed the SPD caucus regarding the ammunition initiative. SPD parliamentary leader Radim Fiala welcomed Babiš’s attendance at the meeting, but said that SPD lawmakers have not yet voted internally on a final position.

Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice-Chair of the ANO movement Karel Havlíček is convinced that although members of the coalition parties may have differing views on some issues, the government will win confidence in the Chamber of Deputies with 108 votes. He said this ahead of Tuesday's meeting of the lower house of parliament. According to its deputy leader Radim Fiala, the coalition SPD movement will decide on its support for the cabinet after today’s address by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) at the party’s caucus.

From 2030, only electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles are likely to be allowed to operate as taxis in Prague. From August next year, taxi vehicles will also be required to meet the Euro 6d emissions standard, a stricter version of EU limits on harmful exhaust emissions.
The measures were approved by the city council. The ordinance will still need to be approved by Prague’s assembly.
City officials cited a sharp increase in the number of taxi vehicles in recent years, their high average age of around ten years, and planned stricter air-quality protection standards as the reasons for the changes.

Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motorists) held a phone call on Monday with his Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski, discussing, among other issues, security and cooperation within the Visegrad Group (Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). Macinka stressed that the new Czech cabinet places great importance on close relations with Poland.
The heads of diplomacy will meet in person later this month at a ministerial summit in Brussels. Since taking office, Macinka visited Slovakia in mid-December and travelled to Ukraine last week.
During a recent visit to Slovakia, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) also voiced support for renewing cooperation within the V4, a position echoed by his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico.

The Chamber of Deputies will open debate on a vote of confidence in the three-party government of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš on Tuesday. The ruling coalition made up of the prime minister’s ANO party, SPD and the Motorists has a comfortable 108 seat majority in the lower chamber and is expected to win the confidence motion. The debate, which will be preceded by addresses from the prime minister and all cabinet members, should take up the better part of two days with the vote itself expected in the late afternoon on Wednesday.
