The European Commission has approved changes to Czechia's state aid scheme for energy-intensive industries, allowing the government to increase support for companies facing high electricity costs linked to the EU emissions trading system.
Under the revised scheme, the maximum share of eligible costs that can be compensated will rise from 75 to 80 percent. More industrial sectors will also become eligible for the support.
According to the Commission, the changes comply with EU state aid rules and are intended to help energy-intensive industries remain competitive while preventing production from moving to countries with less stringent climate regulations.

The Czech Fire Rescue Service is sending a wildfire expert to Brussels to help monitor and coordinate the response to forest fires across Europe and the Mediterranean during the peak fire season.
Firefighter Martin Tomášek from the Karlovy Vary Regional Fire Rescue Service will serve as a liaison officer at the EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre. The centre operates around the clock, monitoring emergencies and coordinating assistance under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
As part of the EU's Wildfire Support Team, Tomášek will monitor and analyse wildfire situations, assess available firefighting resources and help coordinate support for countries affected by major forest fires.

Prague had around 1.36 million registered motor vehicles last year, nearly 36,000 more than a year earlier, according to the city's newly published 2025 transport yearbook. Passenger cars accounted for about 1.1 million of the total.
The yearbook points out that many vehicles are registered to companies, meaning the total does not necessarily reflect how many actually operate in Prague. Most vehicles are still powered by combustion engines, while electric cars account for just 1.6 percent of the fleet.
Barrandov Bridge remained Prague's busiest road, carrying an average of 143,000 vehicles on a working day. Public transport accounted for the largest share of journeys in the capital, ahead of walking and car travel.

Parts of Czechia experienced a tropical night, with temperatures staying above 20 degrees Celsius until morning. According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), the coming nights are expected to be even warmer.
At 5 a.m. on Thursday, temperatures across most of the country ranged between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius. However, several weather stations recorded tropical nights, meaning temperatures did not fall below 20 degrees at any point.
The warmest night is expected from Friday to Saturday, when temperatures in some areas may not drop below 24 degrees Celsius. Very warm nights are also forecast for the beginning of next week.

The European Commission has launched a call to build up to seven large artificial intelligence data centres, known as AI gigafactories, across Europe. Applications are open until November 12, with construction expected to begin next year.
Czechia is among the countries bidding to host one of the facilities, with the project backed by the Czech government. The EU had originally planned to build five AI gigafactories but has now increased the number to as many as seven.

The Czech Interior Ministry has closed administrative proceedings against football club Slavia Prague over crowd violence during May's Prague derby against Sparta, concluding that no further sanctions are necessary.
The ministry found serious shortcomings in the club's security arrangements but said measures introduced by Slavia, together with penalties imposed by the League Football Association, were sufficient. Slavia had faced the possibility of playing home matches behind closed doors for up to a year.
Following the incidents, in which supporters invaded the pitch, attacked Sparta players and threw flares into the away section, Slavia was fined CZK 10 million and ordered to play four matches without spectators. The club has since tightened security, including a ban on face coverings and pyrotechnics, and has issued lifetime stadium bans to the fans involved.

Around 1.13 billion people used Prague’s public transport system in 2025, an increase of approximately 26.2 million compared with the previous year, according to figures released this week. The metro and trams were the most widely used modes of transport in the Czech capital.
Prague’s public transport vehicles, including rail services, covered a total of 212.1 million kilometres last year, 1.5 million more than in 2024.
The total cost of running the service was CZK 27.7 billion, a year-on-year increase of CZK 900 million.

The 52nd edition of the Uherské Hradiště Film School officially closed on Wednesday evening with a screening of Only Beautiful Things to Look At (Prameň) by the Slovak director Ivan Ostrochovský. The filmmaker and the picture’s stars Anna Geislerová and Simona Boledovičová were in attendance.
This year’s edition of the cinema event began on July 2400, featured over 200 films and had 4,600 accredited mainly young visitors.

Irish musician Glen Hansard, who won an Oscar with Czech singer Markéta Irglová for the song Falling Slowly, has died at the age of 56 after a motorbike accident in Dublin.
Hansard first played in Czechia with his band The Frames in 1996 and returned numerous times over the years to play in Prague and many places around the country, including as part of the act The Swell Season with Irglová.
