The Czech weather office has issued storm warnings for eastern Bohemia and northern Moravia and Silesia, where strong winds, high precipitation and hail are expected to hit on Thursday afternoon. Water levels of rivers in the Beskydy Mountains may rise rapidly, occasionally reaching second level flood alert.
On Friday, other regions of the country, especially the southeast, may also see strong winds and stormy conditions.

Three Czech universities are included in the list of the best 500 universities in the world, according to the UK education specialists’ Quacquarelli Symonds rankings released on Thursday.
Prague’s Charles University finished 246th, improving by two places on the previous year. Masaryk University in Brno followed in 408th place, and the Czech Technical University in Prague came third on 420th spot, having improved by 34 places compared to last year.
The World University Rankings ranked over 1500 schools this year, 16 of which were from the Czech Republic.

Czechia’s foreign trade balance ended in a surplus of CZK 33.1 billion in April, an increase by CZK 24.1 billion year-on-year, according to freshly released data by the Czech Statistics Office.
The positive trade balance result was mainly affected by higher car exports. According to the report, exports rose by 19.7 percent year-on-year to CZK 416.2 billion and imports by 13.1 percent to CZK 383.1 billion.

A team of Czech experts is drafting a comprehensive action plan intended to curb excessive drinking. The proposed measures will include restrictions on advertising, regulation of sales and prices, as well as strengthening prevention and professional services. National Drug Coordinator Jindřich Vobořil told reporters he plans to submit the proposal to the government in the early autumn.
According to last year's annual report on addictions, one in eight adults in Czechia drinks excessively at least once a week. As many as 1.3 million people over the age of 15 are risk-drinkers. Alcohol abuse is said to account for up to 7,000 deaths a year. The annual impact costs are estimated at around CZK 60 billion.

According to the Railway Inspectorate investigation, the passenger express, which collided with a freight train in the east Bohemian city of Pardubice on Wednesday night, missed a red light.
It is still unclear whether it was a technical fault, human error or a combination of both factors, the Railway Inspectorate said on its website.
The passenger train, operated by the private company RegioJet, was travelling from Prague to the west Ukrainian city of Chop, with around 390 people on board. Four people died in the head-on collision and another 27 people sustained moderate or light injuries. Among the victims are two Ukrainian women, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

Photographer Bohumil Dobrovolský, who was best known for his photographs of the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia, has died at the age of 89. News of his passing was announced on Facebook by Czech Press Photo. As a thirty-three-year-old amateur photographer Dobrovolský went into the streets of Prague and recorded the tragic atmosphere of the first day of the invasion on 21 August 1968 on seven films. "I am not a hero, it was only indignation, defiance and my home environment that made me free of fear, he said in an interview for Czech Radio years later.

Czechia calling for EU accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova to start before Hungary's presidency
06/05/2024Czech Minister for European Affairs Martin Dvořák has sent an appeal to the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council, urging for it to start negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on accession to the EU in June, i.e. before Hungary is set to take over the rotating EU Presidency in July of this year. Minister Dvořák expressed concern that, under the leadership of Viktor Orban, Hungary could try to freeze the process during his country’s time at the helm. According to Czech Radio, eleven EU states have backed the appeal. They are Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, Slovenia, Portugal and Germany.

The Czech government has approved an amendment to the Labour Code facilitating access to the Czech labour market for citizens of nine non-EU countries. The new draft regulation provides for free access to the Czech labour market for people from Australia, Japan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, Britain, the US, Israel and Singapore. The amendment should take effect as of July of this year and will make life easier particularly for highly-skilled professionals working in this country.
