The Ministry of Justice has drafted a bill that will redefine rape in the Czech legal system. Under the new draft legislation, all non-consensual sexual intercourse would be regarded as rape. Currently, the law defines rape only as sexual intercourse that is coerced by force. The new definition of rape includes both verbal and non-verbal non-consent, and takes into account situations where the attacker takes advantage the victim’s defenselessness, illness, mental disorder or young age.

Coalition party leaders of TOP 09, the Pirate Party, Christian Democrats and Mayors and Independents say they will demand a further explanation from Justice Minister Pavel Blažek of the Civic Democrats as to why he spent five hours in a Prague restaurant in the company of Martin Nejedlý, a controversial advisor to the former president Miloš Zeman, who was believed to have close ties with Russia. Mr. Blažek said earlier that the meeting, which was reported on by Seznam Zprávy, was unplanned and he had ducked into the restaurant to take cover from a heavy storm. The Civic Democratic Party’s coalition partners say they consider the meeting extremely inappropriate and fear it will damage the image of the entire government.

Czech Karolína Muchová reached the semifinals of the tennis tournament in Cincinnati, after compatriot Marie Bouzková retired from their match with right leg strain while trailing 3-0. Muchová now faces Belarusian second seed Sabalenka, whom she beat in the Roland Garros semi-final earlier this year.
Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová did not make it to the semifinals after losing 6:7, 1:6 to world No. 1 Iza Šwiatek of Poland.

Leading Czech music critic, writer and journalist Jiří Černý has died at the age of 87. Černý hosted the first Czechoslovak radio hit parade Dvanáct na houpačce (Twelve on a Swing) and was the first editor-in-chief of Rock & Pop magazine. He was a popular Czech Radio music show host playing the Beatles and Karel Kryl for listeners in the thaw preceding the crushing of the Prague Spring. In November 1989, he participated in the founding of the Civic Forum and in December 2011 he hosted a concert in Lucerna as a tribute to the late Czech president Václav Havel. He wrote over a dozen books and post-1989 hosted his own show on Czech Radio’s Vltava channel for over ten years.

One of the main reasons why people close to retirement find it hard to get a job is a lack of IT skills and a general unwillingness to re-qualify, according to a July survey conducted by the Chamber of Commerce among over 400 employers. According to the findings, almost half of workers over the age of 55 lack good digital skills and a willingness to work with modern technology. Employers say they value older employees for their experience, better work habits and a lower tendency to switch jobs. According to the Chamber of Commerce, companies do not make sufficient use of retraining and educational courses. This active employment policy tool would help alleviate the shortage of workers on the market. According to Eurostat, only about 8.1 per cent of the active population aged between 25 and 64 is interested in improving their qualification, while in the Scandinavian countries up to a third of employees actively seek out the possibility.

The Czech Ministry of Finance has worsened its economic outlook for this year. In its latest economic forecast, it expects gross domestic product to fall by 0.2 percent, compared with a forecast of 0.1 percent in April. The reason for the deterioration is a bigger-than-expected drop in household consumption, Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura said. The ministry kept its estimate of annual inflation unchanged at 10.9 percent.

Vintage Bugatti racing cars will be on display at the Kromeříž Exhibition Centre on Saturday, August 19. People will be able to admire them from 9am to 4pm. On Friday, the veteran Bugattis will take part in the Barum Czech Rally in Zlín. The international gathering of veterans will also feature an exhibition of historic Grand Prix sports cars.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will fly to Prague in October with part of his cabinet for a joint session of the two countries' governments, according to the designated Czech ambassador to Israel, Veronika Kuchyňová Šmigolová. The joint meeting of the governments is scheduled for October 9. The tradition of Czech-Israeli intergovernmental consultations was established by the government of Petr Nečas in 2012. The last time the two cabinets held joint talks was in 2016 in Israel.

The director of the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) in Prague, Michal Stiborek, who is reported to have made tens of millions of crowns by lending money at exorbitant interest rates has resigned from office. The claims appeared on Seznam Zprávy which also questioned the source of the money Stiborek poured into the company which granted loans at immorally high interest rates and contractual penalties. Stiborek earlier dismissed the claims as an attempt to discredit him and remove him from the hospital's management.
Both Health Minister Vlastimil Valek and Prime Minister Petr Fiala have welcomed Stiborek’s resignation.
