Czech kayaker Jiří Prskavec won his third silver at the World Championships in London on Saturday. The two-time world champion was beaten only by home favourite Joseph Clarke. Moroccan Mathis Sudi took the bronze. Prskavec has thus secured a spot in the upcoming Paris Olympics where he will defend his gold medal from Tokyo.

The man who stabbed a schoolgirl in Brno-Zidenice on Wednesday will remain in custody, prosecutor Iveta Eichlerová told reporters. The 37-year-old man, who was on drugs at the time of the attack, has been charged with attempted murder of a child under the age of 15, for which he faces a prison sentence of 15 to 20 years or an exceptional sentence. The man apparently selected his victim at random, running after the girl and stabbing her with a knife on the street. She was saved by witnesses who pacified him and held him captive until the police arrived. The young girl is reported to be in stable condition in intensive care.

Thousands of people took part in the nationwide “Day of Forest Restoration" event on Saturday. They helped to clean up forests, restore fences or plant trees. The event, which took part in eight regions, included an educational program for children. It was organized by the state enterprise Lesy České republiky, which manages almost half of the country's forests. The company’s spokesperson Eva Jouklová, told the ctk news agency that over 5,200 people turned up and planted 29,000 trees.

Police have arrested a fifty-one-year-old burglar who they say has been breaking into houses in Prague and central Bohemia for the past eight years. The man worked at night and not only stole from the houses he entered, but also observed their owners while they were sleeping. The suspect is reported has burgled 21 houses and caused damage worth approximately CZK 8 million. He was even caught on camera watching a small child sleeping. The police said many people made it easy for him by not locking their doors or leaving windows open at night.

Almost three quarters of parents in Czechia give their children pocket money, according to a survey conducted by the investment platform Portu. About 60 percent of parents give their children up to CZK 500 a month, a fifth of parents said they give them between CZK 500 and CZK 1,000 per month. Over 10 percent of respondents with older teenagers said they give them CZK 2,000 a month. About a quarter of parents cover their children's needs by giving them money as needed, and 16 percent of respondents combine both forms, giving them a regular monthly allowance and covering additional purchases as needed.

Michael Šrámek unexpectedly quit this week as head of the Agency for Real Estate Management under the Ministry of Defence. Šrámek's departure after only ten months in office was reported by Lidovky.cz. No reason was given except that it was by "mutual agreement". Neither the ministry nor Šrámek would comment.

Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has confirmed two new postings abroad: Břetislav Dančák will be the new Czech ambassador to Poland and Radek Pech will present his credentials in Ukraine. Both have already received the so-called agrément from their host countries. Mr. Lipavsky said they would be taking up their posts in the autumn. Dančák has worked his entire professional life in academia, serving as vice-rector at Masaryk University in Brno. Pech, the current ambassador to Denmark, is a seasoned diplomat who has previously served as ambassador in Finland, Estonia, Lithuania and a number of other countries.

The Geman and Czech police are planning to take coordinated measures against illegal migration, in response to the worsening situation on the Balkans route. Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan said the two sides were considering a number of measures, including reinstating permanent checks at selected border crossings. He said further talks with his German counterpart Nancy Faeser would take place next week. Similar consultations are underway with Slovakia.
In the course of September, the Czech police detained dozens of illegal migrants from Syria. On Thursday this week officers in South Moravia detained a van carrying 33 refugees during a random road check near the Slovak border. The previous week they stopped a van with 27 migrants from Syria near Hodonín and a few days prior to that eight migrants were detained on a road near Prostějov after the smuggler’s car broke down.

The debate in the lower house on the government’s austerity package was curtailed on Friday and will continue on Wednesday, September 27, the ctk news agency reported. As expected, the package has come under fire from the opposition parties and the debate on it could take several weeks. However, the ruling coalition has a comfortable majority in both houses and is in a position to push it through.
The package, aimed at lowering the state deficit, will raise taxes for individuals and companies, result in layoffs, lower wages in the public sector, and further increase consumer prices. It aims to cut the deficit by a total of CZK 150 billion by 2025.
