The Christian Democrats want to increase tax breaks for families with three or more children, labour minister and head of the party Marian Jurečka said on Saturday at the party's program conference in Prague. He said that having three or more children is very financially demanding and added that although only ten percent of all families fulfil this criterion, they are responsible for raising 30 percent of all children.
Mr. Jurečka also mentioned balancing work and family life, the availability of housing, solutions to migration and security, and the environment and climate change as topics which the Christian Democrats will be focussing on in the coming months.

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Jan Ondřejka, a representative of the Czech Embassy in Moscow, this week over Prague's stance on the recent bombing of the Ukrainian village of Hroza, the Czech News Agency reported on Saturday, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry's own website. The Russian Foreign Ministry described the idea that Russia was responsible for the airstrike as a fabrication and said that it had "communicated the Russian position" on the situation in Ukraine to the Czech diplomat.
The Russian ministry's website went on to complain about Czechia's active support of and provision of weapons to Ukraine, which the ministry said was "contributing to the continuation of the conflict and destabilising the entire region".
According to Kyiv, 55 people were killed in the airstrike on Hroza, which it blames on Russia.

The Christian Democrats would prefer to run in the European elections on a joint ticket with the Civic Democrats and TOP 09, i.e. their government coalition partners, Agriculture Minister and Christian Democrat MP Marek Výborný told the Czech News Agency on Saturday. However, they are prepared to run on their own if need be. Discussions between the three parties are still ongoing and a decision should be made by the end of October.

Local volunteers from Vohančice near Brno planted around 170 trees on Saturday to contribute to the restoration of the local landscape. The project to restore the 35-hectare area of land, which had been plagued by soil erosion, began in 2018. The one-thousandth tree, a linden tree, was planted by President Petr Pavel, who participated in the event.

84 percent of Czechs support a proposed ban on individual cages for farmed animals, according to a Eurobarometer survey, with 52 percent of Czechs saying that protecting the welfare of farmed animals is very important and a further 34 percent saying it is somewhat important. This is only slightly less than the European average - across the entire EU, 89 percent of people support the ban on individual cages and a total of 91 percent say it is either very or somewhat important to protect the welfare of farmed animals.
The NGO Compassion in World Farming said in a press release that despite this broad support among the population, the European Commission had failed to deliver promised revisions to EU animal welfare legislation. Back in 2018, citizens from seven European countries, one of which was Czechia, initiated the ‘End the Cage Age’ European Citizens’ Initiative. This was signed by 1.4 million people and secured a commitment by the European Commission to follow through with a revision of current animal welfare legislation, which was supposed to be delivered in September. However, this week, the Commission again failed to deliver the promised proposal when it announced its planned work programme, after failing to meet the September deadline.

Friday night and Saturday morning were unseasonably warm in Czechia for late October, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute announced on X, formerly Twitter. The Silesia region in particular experienced a near-tropical night, with the temperature never dropping below 19.2 degrees Celsius in the town of Ropice, where the highest temperatures were recorded. Moravia also had an unusually warm night for this time of year.

The Czech Foreign Ministry has advised Czech nationals in Lebanon to leave the country without delay in view of the worsening security situation. As border tensions between Israel and Hezbollah intensify, the security situation may deteriorate rapidly, especially in Shiite areas and areas of the Palestinian refugee camps of Ain al-Hilweh, Burj al-Barajneh, but also in other localities," the ministry said, adding that in the event of further escalation, the operation of Beirut airport cannot be guaranteed. It is advising Czechs to leave Lebanon while flights are still available.

Firefighters have been called to an emergency in the industrial area in Olomouc-Chválkovice where roughly 150 litres of concentrated nitric acid leaked into the sewage system around midday on Friday. Firefighters are stacking sandbags around the outlet to prevent the dangerous chemical from entering the Bystřice River through the sewer. They are also neutralising the acid, which is reported to have leaked from a barrel. Three fire squads and a special chemical unit are intervening at the site.
