• Derailed freight train causes serious damage

    Czech Railways has announced that the rail connection from Chlumec nad Cidlinou to Velky Osek in north-Eastern Bohemia has had to be closed for repairs after a freight train derailed on that route on Sunday night. All fifteen carriages derailed causing damages to the tune of millions of crowns. The damage to the rail tracks has been put at 3.5 million and it should take at least a week to fix. Czech Railways has arranged for a replacement bus service for passengers along the given stretch.

  • Strike by Air France pilots to affect a number of Paris-Prague flights

    The strike by Air France pilots will affect a number of Paris-Prague flights, according to the press department of Vaclav Havel International Airport. Monday’s evening flights Prague- Paris, Paris –Prague have both been cancelled as well as an early morning flight on Tuesday. The airport is advising passengers to follow updates on its web page. The strike could last until Thursday.

  • Government approves increase in minimal wage

    The centre-left government has approved an increase in the minimal monthly wage to 9,200 crowns starting next year. The minimal wage was upped by 700 crowns. The move was strongly advocated by Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka who argued that it was essential to motivate people to work rather than staying on the dole. The cabinet’s decision was unanimous despite opposition from employers. The minimal wage was last raised in August of 2013 by 500 crowns.

  • Amazon plans to build third centre in Czech Republic

    The US online retailer Amazon is planning to build its third centre in the Czech Republic, the E15 daily reports on Monday. The new Returns Centre should be located in Pavlov, an industrial zone near the capital. The company has not confirmed the information. The US Internet giant already has a Returns Centre in Dobrovíz and is currently building a distribution centre there. It should be completed by the end of June 2015 and will create some 2,000 jobs.

  • First Buddhist stupa unveiled in Czech Republic

    Some 2,000 people attended the unveiling of the first Buddhist stupa in the Czech Republic on Sunday in the village of Těnovice in the Plzeň region. The stupa, which is used by Buddhists as a place of meditation, is a seven-metre-tall structure made of granite and contains a treasury filled with various objects, such as texts, Buddha relics and small offerings. The village at the foot of the Brdy hills has been a home to the Diamond Way Buddhist centre since 2003. The Diamond Way is the most popular of the Buddhist teaching methods in the Czech Republic. In 2007 it was registered as the country's first and only Buddhist religious society.

  • Pliskova sisters claim doubles title in Hong Kong

    Czech twin sisters, Karolína and Kristýna Plíšková, won the doubles final at the WTA Hong Kong Tennis Open on Sunday, defeating Patricia Mayr-Achleitner of Austria and Arina Rodionova of Australia 6:2, 2:6, 12:10. It is the third doubles title for the 22-year old sisters this year. Karolína Plíšková has previously failed to claim the singles title, losing to Germany’s Sabine Lisicki but 5:7, 3:6.

  • Rain triggers landslide near Břeclav

    Heavy rain triggered a landslide in the region of Břeclav in southern Moravia on Sunday. The incident happened at a campsite by the river, leaving one caravan buried under the debris. One woman was reportedly injured and had to be taken to hospital. The campside in being evacuated.

  • Event marks 100th anniversary of Czechoslovak Legions

    An event to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Czechoslovak Legions is held at the gardens of Prague’s Czernin Palace, the seat of the Czech Republic’s Foreign Ministry, on Sunday. Visitors can see several exhibitions on the history of the legions and hear a concert performed by the Castle Guard and Czech Police Band.

  • Flood alerts still in place for some parts of Czech Republic

    Lower-level flood alerts are still in place for some parts of the Czech Republic. Meteorologists warn that rivers could still rise in the regions of south Bohemia, Vysočina and Znojmo. The Jevišovka river in the Znojmo region inundated several houses on Sunday afternoon, forcing some 15 people out of their homes. Fire crews in the areas affected by floods reported dozens of emergency calls. Rain is expected to cease in most of the country by midnight.

  • European Heritage Days come to close

    Sunday is the last day of the European Heritage Days, an annual event, organized jointly by the Council of Europe and the European Commission, which offers people the opportunity to visit buildings, monuments and sites, many of which are not normally accessible to the public. The Czech Republic has taken part in the celebrations since 1991 and for the past week, visitors were able to view hundreds of monuments and historical sites for free. This weekend focuses mainly on technical monuments and spa architecture.
