    The police have confirmed receiving a fresh threat from the blackmailers who threatened to spread the Ebola virus in public places if they did not receive one million euros from the state. According to police experts on the case the perpetrators are very likely sophisticated hackers who have proved extremely clever at covering up their tracks and do not actually have the means to carry out their threat. Police specialists are cooperating on the case with foreign experts. If caught and convicted the blackmailers could face up to 12 years in jail.

    The Spanish police are reported to have arrested four Czech nationals caught smuggling 369 kilograms of cocaine on a boat heading for the Canary Islands. The boat was sailing from South America under a Czech flag and the drugs were hidden in a number of secret compartments. The four offered little resistance and the boat was towed to port in Las Palmas.

    Unemployment in the Czech Republic dropped by 0.2 percentage point month-on-month to 7.1 percent in October, the Labour Office said on Monday. The situation on the labour market is influenced by the economic revival and ongoing seasonal work in gastronomy, construction, tourism and agriculture. In the coming months, unemployment is expected to stagnate or grow moderately with the gradual decrease in seasonal work and the ending of fixed-term work contracts, the Labour Office said.

    President Miloš Zeman has begun a three-day visit to Moravia and Silesia. On Monday he met with the mayor of Ostrava and local politicians to debate the problems of the region, among which are high unemployment and severe air pollution. The president is due to meet with members of the public and visit some of the region’s leading companies among them Tatra Truck in Kopřivnice and Semag in Havířov.

    The ANO party of the centre-left ruling coalition is gaining increasing public trust and would win a landslide victory in general elections, according to the outcome of a poll by TNS Aisa. According to the poll results ANO would now win 35 percent of the vote gaining 85 seats in the lower house. In the last elections it won 18.6 percent of the vote 47 seats. The second strongest party – the Social Democrats would be left far behind with just 18 percent of the vote while the right wing TOP 09 would get 9.5 percent.

    The Czech Republic claimed its third Fed Cup title in four years after Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitov8 beat Angelique Kerber of Germany7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 in the opening reverse singles match on Sunday. Her hard-won victory gave the Czechs an unassailable 3-0 lead against Germany on the indoor hard court of Prague’s 02 Arena. The Czechs won their first title as an independent nation in 2011 and retained the trophy the following year. Czechoslovakia won five times, including three straight from 1983-85.

    Industry and Trade Minister Jan Mládek is heading a Czech trade mission to Japan, the ctk news agency reports. Mr. Mládek is accompanied by representatives of some twenty companies from the pharmaceutical, engineering and food sectors seeking to find new business opportunities in Japan. The trade ministers of the two countries are expected to sign a memorandum on cooperation in the field of nuclear power and an agreement on cooperation between their state agencies in support of exports Jetro and CzechInvest. Japan is the second biggest foreign investor in the Czech Republic, after neighbouring Germany.

    A tragic accident brought the Krkonoše Rally to a premature end on Sunday. One of the drivers, thirty-five year-old Miloš Vagner, lost control in a sharp turn of the road and hit a barn. He died at the site of the accident. His navigator Petr Gross was airlifted to hospital in serious condition.

    Czech javelin champion Barbora Špotáková has been elected Athlete of the Year for the seventh time in her career. Another representative of the same discipline, javelin thrower Vítěslav Veselý came second and 400m runner Pavel Maslák came third. The Czech decathlon champion Jiří Sýkora was elected Newcomer of the Year and the title Coach of the Year went to the javelin legend Jan Železný.

    The minister for human rights and minorities, Jiří Dienstbier of the Social Democratic Party, has slammed party representatives in the north Bohemian town of Duchcov who last week entered into a coalition with the ultra-right Workers Party. The party has been one of the main organizers of anti-Romany protests in the town of Duchcov. In a debate on commercial TV Prima, Mr. Dienstbier said he deeply regretted that any Social Democrat would enter into a coalition with a party that incites racial hatred which he said was a flagrant violation of the Social Democrats policy program and the values it upheld. Mr. Dienstbier said he agreed with the prime minister’s suggestion that the local branch of the Social Democrats should be scrapped and the persons in question expelled from party ranks.
