The top Book of the Year prize at the prestigious Magnesia litera Czech literary awards has gone to Básník (Poet), subtitled A Novel about Ivan Blatný, by Martin Reiner. Almost 600 pages long, the book explores the life and work of Blatný, a leading Czech poet who went into exile in the UK and spent his later years in mental institutions. At Tuesday night’s awards ceremony in Prague the closely watched Prose prize went to Petr Stančík for Mlýn na mumie (Mill for Mummies).

The Terezín Memorial in Central Bohemia is planning a new permanent exhibition of art created in opposition to fascism and war, its spokesman Tomáš Rieger said on Tuesday. Special emphasis will be placed on artists who were concentration camp inmates or were executed by the Nazis. The exhibition at the Terezín (Theresianstadt) camp will open on May 17. The memorial is also planning events, including a remembrance ceremony attended by senior officials, in connection with the forthcoming 70th anniversary of the end of the war.

Czech President Miloš Zeman is to award the Order of T.G. Masaryk to František Kriegel, a late Communist politician who was the only person to refuse to sign a document “legitimising” the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Also set to receive a high honour at Prague Castle on October 28, the anniversary of the country’s foundation, is a student who lost his life last year protecting a classmate from a school attack. The Medal for Heroism will go to Petr Vejvoda, who died at his school in Žďár nad Sázavou after a woman diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia began randomly attacking students.

Shooting has begun in Prague on a film biography of Czech interwar actress Lída Baarová. The project, helmed by director Filip Renč and starring Táňa Pauhofová, had been in the planning stages for some years. Lída Baarová was the mistress of Nazi propaganda chief Josef Goebbels and he and Adolf Hitler will appear as characters in the movie, which has the working title Hour of Temptation.

The deputy chairman of the Czech Football Association, Roman Berbr, has officially requested that player Milan Baroš be sanctioned for comments he made on Twitter. The official called for the striker to be suspended after he described Czech soccer as a cesspit and called on fans to protest against Berbr and his partner Dagmar Damková, who heads the country’s referees committee. Baroš made the statements after his club Baník Ostrava had been beaten by league leaders Viktoria Plzeň.

A criminal complaint of corruption has been filed against Czech national ice hockey coach Vladimír Růžička, TV Nova’s website reported. The complaint was made by businessman Jiří Jehlička. He says the trainer may be guilty of bribe-taking, fraud and breach of trust in connection with a sum of CZK 500,000 he is alleged to have accepted from a man to allow his son to play for Slavia Prague, where he also coaches. Mr. Růžička said on Monday that the money was a contribution from a sponsor.

A large exhibition marking 50 years of the existence of the Czech animated series Večerníček will be held in Prague this summer. The show at the city’s Wallenstein Riding School and Kampa Museum will feature sets, illustrations, photographs and other items relating to Večerníček, which has been hugely popular with several generations of Czech children. The CEO of organiser Czech Television, Petr Dvořák, said the series was unparalleled in Europe. The exhibition will run from May 30 to mid-September.

An opposition attempt to remove Adriana Krnáčová as mayor of Prague has failed. Councillors from TOP 09 and the Civic Democrats demanded the sacking of the ANO politician, who they accuse of acting illegally by selecting a lawyer in a property dispute on the recommendation of the city’s opponents in the case. However, Ms. Krnáčová survived a vote during Tuesday morning’s extraordinary council session thanks to backing from her own party, the Social Democrats and the Three-Coalition, which together rule the city.

The police are investigating the death of a man who fell onto the track on Prague’s “C” line and was track by an oncoming subway train. The incident occurred shortly before 7 PM on Monday evening; investigators have not yet learned the person’s identity. The cause of the accident is not yet known as the area where the person fell was not monitored by CCTV; witnesses are being sought. Transit on the line resumed after an hour or so.

Dozens of events, including commemorative ceremonies and concerts attended by top politicians, will be held in the Czech Republic at the end of April and early May to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Czech News Agency reports, citing a document the cabinet is expected to approve on Wednesday. The biggest events include a concert for 1,800 guests that is to be held in Prague´s Congress Centre on May 5, and a remembrance event at Prague’s Vítkov Memorial. In Plzeň, west Bohemia, celebrations will mark the anniversary of the liberation of the town by the U.S. troops. Political leaders are also to attend a ceremony in Terezín, north Bohemia, and a meeting marking 70 years from the battle for the Czechoslovak Radio building during the Prague Uprising in early May 1945. Invitations to events have been extended to politicians as well as the head-of-state; the president and the prime minister will deliver speeches on the occasion.
