The number of road deaths in the Czech Republic this July was, at 46, the lowest for the month since the start of the 1990s, a police representative said on Tuesday. Last year 60 people died on Czech roads in July. The overall figure for the first seven months of 2017 was down slightly on the number for the same period in 2016.

The body of a Czech woman who died in Hurgada, Egypt last week has been repatriated to the Czech Republic, the spokeswoman for the Czech Foreign Ministry, Michaela Lagronová confirmed on Tuesday. The Czech, who was 36, was one of several women attacked by a knifeman at a local resort. Two others died in the attack. Although the Czech woman's injuries were initially described as minor, her condition later suddenly deteriorated rapidly before she could be brought back to the Czech Republic. She reportedly died from multiple organ failure; a second autopsy is likely and the case is to be investigated by the Czech National Office for Combating Organised Crime.

A lower house committee investigating the leaking of information from police files has questioned the head of the General Inspectorate of the Security Forces, Michal Murín, and the director of the country’s intelligence service, Michal Koudelka. Neither spoke to the press following Tuesday’s interviews. The case arose after anonymously released recordings appeared to show a journalist offering ANO chief Andrej Babiš police information and the two men planning smear campaigns against Mr. Babiš’s rivals when the journalist worked for a newspaper owned by the politician. Mr. Babiš says the recordings are fake.

A young puma that escaped from a zoo park at Zvole near Prague on Monday has been caught. The animal, which is seven months old, was tranquilised and returned to its owner. Nobody was injured by the animal, a police spokesperson said after its recapture on Tuesday morning. The director of the zoo park said the puma’s cage had been tampered with. Police said they were still looking into how it had managed to get out.

The police are reportedly preparing to shelve their investigation into the disappearance of 12-year-old Michaela M., who went missing in Ústí nad Labem on January 11 of this year. Investigators introduced an embargo on information related to the case after the partner of the girl’s mother committed suicide the same month; according to the Czech News Agency, police saw the deceased as the main suspect in the child’s disappearance. Searches near the child's home and other sites yielded no clues as to her possible whereabouts.

Only a handful of participants remained early on Monday at a meadow near Nymburk, east of Prague, after attending an illegal techno party at the site at the weekend which attracted up to 6,000 people in total. Around 200, the Czech News Agency reported, had remained at the site a day earlier. The local mayor has complained the field was damaged by the illegal gathering while locals complained that the loud music had disturbed the peace. The party began on Friday; police tried to get attendees to leave but otherwise did not step in.

The regional governor for Zlín, Jiří Čunek, has declared a state of emergency in the region to try and isolate and prevent the spread of African swine fever. The outbreak of the disease among wild boar is largely concentrated in a 20 square kilometer area; one measure to be taken will be the instalation of 45 kilometre-long electric fencing to keep infected animals in.

Some 40 firefighters on Monday responded to a fire in a large field near Zhoř in the district of Tachov, which saw traffic on the nearby D5 highway disrupted. The fire, about a kilometre in length, threatened to spread to nearby forest. The firefighters responding at the scene included professionals as well as volunteers.
