• Weather records set around Czech Republic on Sunday

    Temperature records were set around the Czech Republic on Sunday. Seven measuring stations in South Bohemia that have been keeping records for more than 20 years saw their warmest ever temperature for the day. The hottest place in the country was Volary in Prachatice region, where it was 23.8 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists expect more temeprature records may tobe broken on Monday.

  • Unions to demand minimum wage rise from new government

    Czech unions have prepared a list of ten requirements for the future government to fulfill during its mandate. One of the requirements is to raise the minimum wage to 50 percent of the average wage within the next four years, the head of the Czech Confederation of Trade Unions Josef Středula said in a debate on Czech Television on Sunday. According to him, the unions will present the requirements in the coming days.

    The government decided in August to increase the minimum wage by 11 percent to 12,200 crowns as of next year. That should be about 40 percent of the average wage, which reached 29,346 crowns in the second quarter of 2017.

  • GlobalMarkets names Jiří Rusnok Central Bank Governor of the Year

    Governor of the Czech National Bank, Jiří Rusnok, was named Central Bank Governor of the Year 2017 for Central and Eastern Europe by GlobalMarkets, a newspaper of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

    GlobalMarkets Magazine acknowledged Rusnok for smooth termination of foreign exchange interventions, including thorough preparation and efficient communication, the Czech National Bank said in a press release issued on Sunday. The magazine also praised the bank's policy on financial stability.

  • Parents who kidnapped their children wanted on European arrest warrant

    Police are searching for two children who were kidnapped by their parents from a children’s home in Strakonice, South Bohemia on Friday. The two brothers, aged four and 10, were removed from the parents by the court. They were abducted during regular visiting hours in the home.

    The parents are now wanted on a European Arrest Warrant, the South Bohemian police spokesman Jiří Matzner told the Czech News Agency on Sunday. According to the police, witnesses saw the parents with both children in Freyung, Germany.

  • Czech filmmaker Marie Dvořáková receives Student Academy Award

    Czech filmmaker Marie Dvořáková received a Student Academy Award for her short film ‘Who is Who in Mycology’ at a ceremony at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on Friday night. Dvořáková is the second Czech winner of a Student Oscar, after Jan Svěrák, who got it in 1989 for his short film Oil Gobblers.

    ‘Who is Who in Mycology, which has been chosen as the bronze winner in the narrative film category, is Marie Dvořáková’s graduate film at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. The film was shot in Czech-US coproduction with Negativ Film Production and Czech Televison and it was supported by the Czech Film Fund.

  • Above-average temperatures expected in next four weeks

    Temperatures in the Czech Republic in the next four weeks should be above average for the time of year, according to a long-term forecast by the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute. Next week is expected to be the warmest, with daytime temperatures reaching up to 20 degrees Celsius. The remaining weeks should be slightly cooler, with daytime highs only around 10 degrees Celsius. Rainfall levels over the next four weeks should be average or slightly below average for the time of year.

    Czech tennis player Barbora Strýcová has advanced to the final round of WTA event in Linz. In Saturday’s match, the 31-year-old Czech beat Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-3, 7-6 In the final round, Strýcová will face the winner of the match between Slovakia’s Magdaléna Rybáriková or Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland.

  • V4 presidents support EU integration of Western Balkans

    Heads of state of the V4 countries have expressed their support for the integration of the Western Balkan countries into the European Union and called for accelerating the process during a two-day meeting in Szekszard in Hungary, which got underway on Friday.

    According to the Czech President Miloš Zeman, who attended the summit with his Hungarian, Polish and Slovak counterparts, they have also agreed that there was a risk of spreading radical Islam in Bosnia. The heads of state have also talked about ecology or digitization.

  • Two new bishops consecrated in Olomouc

    Two new bishops of the Olomouc Archdiocese were consecrated at a ceremony in the cathedral of St Wenceslas on Saturday. The newly ordained bishops, Antonín Basler and Josef Nuzík, had been appointed to the office by Pope Francis in June this year. They were consecrated by Archbishop Jan Graubner of Olomouc.

    The ceremony in the cathedral of St Wenceslas was attended by around two thousand people, including several other bishops from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland and representatives of the political and public life.
