A priceless wooden church in Hradec Kralove –the Church of St.Nicolas- dating back to the beginning of the 17th century is getting special protection after two wooden historic buildings were ravaged by fire and completely destroyed.
The most recent loss was the wooden church in Trinec Guty from 1563 which was burnt to the ground in August. Even its bells melted in the blaze and its wood carved interiors and precious paintings from the first half of the 16th century were irretrievably lost.
The wooden church in Hradec Kralove now has an early fire alarm system which would set off a mechanism to put out the fire within minutes if no immediate response to the alarm is registered. The church in Guty burnt down in the middle of the night in a case of suspected arson.

The nuclear power plant in Dukovany is fully operational once again, after undergoing maintenance on its third reactor, which was out of operation for a period of four months. It was reconnected to the power grid on Friday.
The reactor underwent a change of fuel, a maintenance check and minor repair-work. The reactor should be producing at full capacity by Monday.

The Social Democratic Party will hold an election conference in February 2018, rather than in April as originally planned the ctk news agency reports, citing party sources. A proposal for the party chairman to be elected by a direct vote, has failed to win approval and the next chairman will be elected by delegates as usual. Candidates for the top post must be party members.
The Social Democrats are striving to recover from their poor showing in October’s general elections where they only collected 7.2 percent of the vote. The party has said will now go into the opposition.

The head of the Constitutional Court Pavel Rychetský has said an important point is being missed when it comes to discussion of direct democracy in the Czech Republic, including a general referendum bill promoted by Czech parties such as ANO and Freedom and Direct Democracy.
He added he was slightly irritated by discussions on adopting direct democracy unless questions on why and under what circumstances and conditions it was needed were properly debated and answered first. He said no such discussion was taking place.
He made the comments in a debate on the 25th anniversary of the Czech Republic’s Constitution. Some have argued that instead of deepening democracy, such a general referendum bill could have the opposite effect.

Prague Castle has opened doors to the public to see state rooms which were renovated over the course of the summer. The public will be able to visit this Friday and Saturday (November 3 and 4).
Visitors will be able to see various rooms used to receive official guests, as well as smaller salons. Among the sites highlighted are a famous staircase from Matyáš Gate, the Cloakroom, the Throne Room, and the Brožík Drawing Room – all located in the Castle’s Southern wing.

More than 80 Roma students, at high schools and vocational schools, officially received stipends on Friday from the NGO Romea. Recipients are students whose study is threatened by poor domestic or financial conditions.
The stipend system covering the high school and vocational schools is in its second year and was founded by the NGO after repeated requests from parents in the Roma community. Stipends for high school students are 14,000 crowns per year and 21,000 for vocational school students.
The NGO already ran a program helping students at the university level.

The billionaire Daniel Křetínský's Energetický a průmyslový (EPH) is aiming to buy the Plzeň-based company Škoda Transportation, according to the daily Mladá fronta Dnes and the weekly Euro. The price of the transaction has been estimated as worth more than 10 billion crowns (some 390 million euros). According to a shareholder quoted, the deal could be completed before the end of the year.
With 5,300 employees, Škoda Transportation is the largest mechanical engineering company in Central and Eastern Europe.

Former MP, former party deputy leader, and former Social Democrat governor Michal Hašek has said he will not run for the party leadership when the Social Democrats hold their convention. The politician left the top brass of the party four years ago following a power struggle among leading members. Then, the Social Democrats narrowly won the election then but slipped to sixth spot this year with their poorest result since the 1990s.
The party is considering going into the opposition but Hašek warned the move could be a nail in the coffin.
Since the Social Democrats would not be the strongest opposition party, he said, it was questionable they would be able to attract enough attention. At the same time, he said he did not mean to imply the party should enter a coalition with this year’s election winner, ANO.

Czech composer and former head of the Czech Philharmonic, Václav Riedlbauch, has died. His wife confirmed he had fought against illness for a year.
Throughout his career Mr Riedlbauch authored numerous chamber and orchestral works including a ballet adaptation of Macbeth, which ran for six seasons at the National Theatre from 1984. Riedlbauch was 70 years old.
