The Czech government has approved the earmarking of CZK 215.8 billion for the maintenance and development of the country’s supersonic air force between now and 2030, Novinky.cz reported on Wednesday evening.
The figure includes planned spending on two dozen F-35 fighter jets as well as the cost of leasing the Gripen fighters currently being used by the Czech Army.
The minister of defence, Jana Černochová, has said the amount approved includes all costs relating to infrastructure, fuel and training.

The Czech Chamber of Deputies approved next year’s state budget in the third reading on Wednesday. The budget for 2024 envisages a deficit of CZK 252 billion, which is CZK 43 billion less than this year’s approved deficit.
As in previous budget discussions in the lower house, verbal spats between the opposition and the government were seen in Wednesday’s session, which concluded late in the evening.
During the final budget debate MPs rubberstamped 13 transfers of funding, amounting to CZK 2.7 billion, within the already set parameters.
The Senate has no say on the budget and it only remains for the president to sign it into law.

The main hall of Prague’s Main Train Station, which according to freshly revealed plans should be partly demolished, is a protected cultural landmark, the Ministry of Culture said on Wednesday.
A winning design to remodel part of the 1970s station building and extend it over part of an adjacent park envisages the front of the current building being removed.
However, an official said, the main building is in fact technically an extension of the historical Fanta building, which is protected.
The overhaul of the station, which is planned to get underway in 2028, is a joint project of the railways authority, the City of Prague and the capital’s transport authority.

The funeral of former Czech foreign minister Karel Schwarzenberg at Prague’s St. Vitus Cathedral on Saturday next week will also be accompanied by a more informal event for the public, the news website Seznam Zprávy reported. Entitled Karel Lives On!, it will include a rock concert at the city’s Lucerna Palace and an exhibition of photos of the late politician, who died earlier this month.

Parental allowance is set to rise in Czechia from the start of next year, after the Senate approved the move on Wednesday. The total amount allocated per child should go from the present CZK 300,000 to CZK 350,000 under the change, which still has to be rubberstamped by the president.
The increased parental allowance will go to children born after the turn of the year. The maximum payment period will be reduced from four to three years.

The majority of Czechs are, for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion, not in favour of military support for Ukraine, suggests a new Kantar CZ poll for Czech Television cited by the news outlet Deník N on Wednesday. The survey indicates that 47 percent are in favour of such backing, while 51 percent are not. This continues a trend of declining support for military aid to Ukraine, Deník N said.
A Kantar CZ expert said that voters of opposition party ANO had most changed their position on this issue in the last 18 months.

A third and final debate on next year’s state budget began in the Czech Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday. The budget for 2024 envisages a deficit of CZK 252 billion, which is CZK 43 billion less than this year’s approved deficit.
During the approval process, deputies will decide on hundreds of proposals for transfers within the already agreed budget parameters; these total over CZK 200 billion, which is about 10 percent of overall planned spending.
The governing coalition have a firm majority in the lower house, making the vote a formality.

Czech MPs have approved the use of electronic identity documents instead of physical ones. Under an amendment to the law on digital services approved on Wednesday, users will be able to show their ID via a mobile app, which is currently being designed by the national Digital Information Agency.
Such electronic ID will be voluntary and will not replace physical copies.
The legislation, which now goes to the Senate, should come into effect next year.

Czech President Petr Pavel is among the 28 most influential people who will co-determine the character of Europe in 2024, according to the Brussels-based website Politico.
In a brief profile of the Czech head of state Politico describes Petr Pavel as an arch hawk when it comes to both Russia and China, who has given his full-throated support to Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion, using his knowledge of NATO’s inner workings.
It also points out that the Czech president is using his experience as former head of NATO's military committee to advocate for more effective support for Kyiv.
Other politicians on the list include for example French President Emmanuel Macron, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
