A 33-year-old Czech paraglider has sustained serious injuries after falling from a height of around twenty metres. The incident occurred in southern Austria on Sunday afternoon. The man was airlifted to a hospital in Klagenfurt to undergo treatment.

The Czech grain harvest is expected to drop by 7.5 percent on the previous year, hitting an overall yield of 6.3 million tonnes, according to preliminary data released by the Czech Statistics Office on Monday. It is third lowest figure over the past ten years.
The harvest of poppy seeds will also be affected by this year’s prolonged period of drought, dropping by one fourth on the previous year to 15,000 tonnes. The harvest of rapeseed, on the other hand, is expected to increase by over 12 percent to 1.3 million tonnes.

Several firefighter units are trying to extinguish a blaze that has broken out at a waste sorting facility in Kutná Hora, just 50 kilometers out of Prague. The fire has already spread to a nearby field.
A third degree fire-alert is in place, a spokesman for the fire service Jaroslav Gabriel told the Czech News Agency. Several firefighters, who are trying to prevent the blaze from spreading to a nearby hall, have collapsed as a result of the intense heat.

The number of Russian nationals living in the Czech Republic keeps increasing, the Czech News Agency reported on Sunday, citing data released by the Ministry of Interior. There are currently 37,000 Russians permanently residing in the country, compared to 23,300 ten years ago.
Russians are currently the fourth biggest group of foreigners with long term residency in the Czech Republic, making up seven percent of all foreign residents. According to a recent poll carried out by CVVM agency, focusing on Czechs’ perception of foreign nationalities living in the country, around one third of respondents said they disliked Russians.

August 11 proved to be the most tragic day on Czech roads so far this year. A total of six people, four of them motorcyclists, lost their lives in traffic accidents, on Saturday, the Czech News Agency has reported. The number of motorcycle fatalities in the Czech Republic ranks among the worst in Europe and the number of accidents traditionally increases during the summer months.

Czech runner Eva Vrabcová Nývltová has won the bronze medal in the women's marathon at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin. The former nordic skier covered the race in a time of 2:26:31, setting a new Czech record and winning the first-ever marathon medal in the country's history. The race was won by Volha Mazuronak of Belarus.

Czech road cycling racer Roman Kreuziger has signed a two-year contract with South Africa’s Dimension Data Team from Australia’s Mitchelton-Scott.
“Joining Team Dimension Data provides a new motivation for me, a fresh start in some ways," he said, adding that he was entering into the prime of his career. Kreuziger, who is 32, has finished repeatedly in the top 10 in the Tour-de-France.

The current heatwave is likely to continue in the Czech Republic until the end of summer holidays, with temperatures of above 30 degrees Celsius expected to return next week.
According to a long-term forecast from the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute, above average temperatures will stay until the end of August, while rainfall levels will remain below average for the time of year.
The Czech Republic, like the rest of the continent, is facing one of the most severe droughts in its history, which has had a dramatic impact on farming and agriculture.

More than 50 Jewish monuments around the country will open to the public free of charge on Sunday as part of this year’s Day of Jewish Monuments. Visitors will be able to see synagogues, Jewish cemeteries and other buildings, some of which are normally not accessible. The event, organized by the Jewish community in Prague in cooperation with the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic, is held for the third time.
Some 200 synagogues and 370 Jewish cemeteries have been preserved to this day in the Czech Republic. Around 70 synagogues were destroyed in the country during the Second World War and another 105 were demolished under the post-war Communist regime. by the end of the War.
