    The Social Democrats are to nominate Tomáš Petříček for the post of foreign minister, Czech Television reported. The junior party in the coalition government had previously put forward Miroslav Poche for the position but President Miloš Zeman refused to appoint him.

    The head of the Social Democrats, Minister of the Interior Jan Hamáček, is currently serving as the country’s diplomatic chief in a caretaker capacity. Mr. Petříček is at present deputy minister of foreign affairs.

    Czech-born musician Ivan Král is set to play a sold-out concert at Prague’s Lucerna Music Bar on Tuesday evening. The singer and guitar player, who has been living in the US since the 1960s, is promoting his latest LP, Colors.

    Ivan Král was a member of the Patti Smith Group in the 1970s and collaborated with Iggy Pop. In the 1990s he produced a number of Czech groups.

    Jaroslav Šilhavý has been appointed coach of the Czech international football team. He replaces Karel Jarolím, who was recently fired after two years in the job following a humiliating defeat to Russia.

    Šilhavý, who is 56, will lead the Czechs for the first time next month, when they take on Slovakia and Ukraine in the Nations League, a competition in which they lost their opening game. The new manager helmed Slavia Prague to the domestic league title the season before last.

    President Miloš Zeman will name Michal Mazanec President of the Supreme Administrative Court on Tuesday.

    The 67-year-old judge is a recognized specialist in administrative law and was actively involved in reforming this branch of the judiciary post-1989.

    Mazanec has served as vice-chairman of the Supreme Administrative Court since 2003. He will replace Josef Baxa in the top post.

    Czech-born architect Eva Jiřičná was presented with a lifetime achievement medal at the London Design Festival on Monday.

    Jiřičná, who has been based in London for 50 years, was honoured for a career portfolio that includes the interior design of the Lloyds of London building, the home of fashion designer Joseph Ettedgui, as well as many of his Joseph stores, and a convention centre in the Moravian city of Zlín.

    The Czech Republic and Slovakia want to cooperate in modernizing their armed forces, the prime ministers of the two countries said after a joint session of their governments on Monday.

    Although both need to acquire some military hardware from foreign firms, in some cases they could support domestic production by buying from each other.

    The two countries officials agreed they would inform each other about prepared military tenders and the countries’ defense ministers and army officials are due to meet in October to settle the details.

    The Czech Ornithological Society is urging citizens to take an active part in international Collision Count Week starting September 24.

    During the course of that week people will be able to report glass panes which present a threat to birds and thus help lower bird mortality on the continent and beyond. Reportedly tens of thousands of birds die every year after flying into glass panes.

    The Czech Republic has the highest number of job vacancies in the European Union, according to figures released by Eurostat on Monday.

    According to quarterly data on the ratio of job vacancies and the number of occupied posts, the Czech Republic had 5.4 percent unoccupied positions compared to the EU average of 2.2 percent.

    A year ago the Czech Republic had 3.6 percent unoccupied positions. It is followed by Belgium (3.5 percent), The Netherlands (3.1 percent) and Germany (2.9 percent).

    Speaking ahead of a joint session of the Czech and Slovak governments in the town of Košice on Monday, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš questioned the need for the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex, saying that in his view the agency was obsolete. The Czech prime minister has previously criticized Frontex for allegedly doing too little to guard EU borders during the migrant crisis, despite receiving large sums of money to do so.

    Mr. Babiš also praised cooperation within the Visegrad Group states, noting that the V4 represented the interests of 65 million Europeans.

    The Czech and Slovak governments held a joint session to discuss celebrations marking the centenary of Czechoslovakia in October, bilateral relations and Visegrad Group priorities. The tradition of holding an annual joint session of the two countries' governments was established in 2012.
