ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel producer, will sell its steelmaking facilities in the Czech Republic, Romania, Macedonia and Italy to the British Liberty House, a spokesperson for Arcelor Mittal confirmed on Friday.
The sales deal is part of an agreement with the European Commission related to ArcelorMittal’s acquisition of Italian steelmaker Ilva.
The acquisition price has not been made public. Together the companies have over 12,000 employees.

A snake on the loose in a Kaufland store in Orlova, in the Karvina region, has been captured and the store has reopened to the public.
The store had been closed since Tuesday when the snake appeared on security cameras on the premises. Vets were unable to identify it from the pictures available and set thermal traps in different parts of the store.The reptile, which turned out to be a harmless grass snake, was captured on Friday.
It is the second snake-scare in the country this month. Recently a green mamba escaped in Prague, after biting its owner, but it too was eventually captured in a near-by garden.

Czechs in 25 constituencies go to the polls to cast their ballot in a second round of senatorial elections on Friday and Saturday.
The vote in two constituencies where candidates won over 50 percent of the voter support has already been decided.
The elections to a third of seats in the Senate will decide which fractions will have a majority in the upper chamber.
It is already clear that it will not be the ruling ANO party and Social Democrats, which will consequently have more trouble pushing their proposed legislation through the Senate.
Voting ends at 2pm on Saturday.

A spell of unusually warm weather broke records around the country on Thursday. Record temperatures for October 11 were seen at 62 stations keeping records for 30 years or more. The highest temperature 25.7 degrees Celsius – was registered in Husinec-Řež near Prague. The warm and sunny weather is expected to continue over the weekend.

The ceremonial launch of three days of harvesting began on Friday morning at the largest Czech fish pond Rožmberk, near Třeboň in South Bohemia. The town is the country’s most famous centre for the production of carp, which is traditionally eaten by Czechs for Christmas dinner.
Overall, fishermen in Třeboň expect to harvest some 2,200 tonnes of fish from its 250 ponds this year. Last year, the traditional fish harvest attracted some 55,000 people.

Presidents of the Visegrad group states – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia are holding a summit in the High Tatras in Slovakia.
Among the topics on the two-day V 4 summit will be the future of the EU, the European social agenda, ageing of the population and issues concerning the Roma minority.

Czech football player Filip Firbacher has been included among 60 of the best young talents in world football born in 2001 by the British daily Guardian.
The 16-year-old player from Hradec Králové made his debut for the Czech Under-17s when he was 15. He is playing in the Czech Under-19 league and scored 11 goals last season.
According to the Guardian, Firbacher is the most talented centre-forward in the Czech Republic and is reportedly eyed by the Southampton scouts.

Police in Ostrava have warned against a new type of synthetically made marihuana that has appeared on the black market in the city.
The dangerous substance first appeared among drug users in the Moravian-Silesian region in September. So far, 23 people have been treated for intoxication after taking the drug and one person died as a result of combining the drug with alcohol.
Police have warned there could be thousands of doses of the synthetic drug among addicts. Six people have been charged in connection with the case.

The Pirate Party, the civic movement Praha Sobě and the Allied Forces for Prague (comprising of TOP09, Christian Democrats and STAN) have agreed on the reconstruction of Libeň bridge over the Vltava River. The possible coalition partners at Prague City Hall entered into talks on forming a municipal coalition in Prague on Wednesday. The first meetings focused on transport, including the development on the new D metro line, parking in the city and the reconstruction of Libeň Bridge, a 1928 historical construction with Cubist elements.
Earlier this year, the City Council executive committee backed the demolition of the bridge, but the decision met with protests from conservationists and other experts.
Negotiations over the formation of a municipal coalition at Prague City Hall will continue in the following day.

A total of 410 people died on Czech roads in the first nine months of 2018, which is 43 more than in the same period last year, the head of the country’s traffic police, Tomáš Lerch, announced at a press conference on Thursday.
Most people died in head-on collisions or in accidents caused by speeding. On the other hand, the number of alcohol-related accidents has dropped to 21, which is 13 fewer than in the previous year.
