A Czech soldier killed in Afghanistan last year has been awarded the US Bronze Star Medal in memoriam. The Bronze Star Medal, one of the highest US decorations for bravery in a combat zone, was presented to Tomáš Procházka’s close family by an embassy representative on Friday.
Corporal Tomáš Procházka, a specialist in training dogs, was shot dead in October 2018 while returning from a routine mission outside his base in Herat Province.

The number of people diagnosed with HIV who are getting treatment in the Czech Republic has seen a steady increase in the past few years. While in 2013 it was 75 percent, last year 95 percent of people diagnosed HIV positive in this country received treatment, according to statistics released by the National Laboratory for HIV and AIDS.
Since testing in this country began in 1986, 3,600 people were diagnosed HIV positive, and 660 of them developed full-blown AIDS. 300 of them have died. According to estimates another 530 people are infected without yet being aware of it.
It is estimated that the majority of those who stopped turning up for treatment may be Czechs and foreigners who moved abroad. A third of the people were diagnosed with HIV in this country are foreign nationals.

Czech economic growth in the 3rd quarter has slowed to 2.5 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the Czech Statistics Office. Compared to the 2nd quarter GDP rose by 0.4 percent.
Analysts say this confirms the predicted slow-down in economic growth, although compared to the situation in Germany, the Czech Republic’s main export destination, the Czech figures are still viewed as positive.
Economic growth in 2018 reached 2.9 percent and the prediction for this year is 2.5 percent.

The King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV was voted the most significant figure in Czech history, in a public poll conducted by the CVVM agency.
The co-founder of Czechoslovakia and its first president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk placed second and the country’s first post-communist president Václav Havel came third.
Fourth place went to the late Czech pop idol Karel Gott. Respondents said the Golden Era of Czech history was during the rule of Charles IV and in the modern era they highlighted the time of the Velvet Revolution.

Senate chair Jaroslav Kubera has dismissed comments from President Milos Zeman regarding his planned trip to Taiwan next year as a message directed not to him but to the Chinese authorities.
President Zeman said in an interview for TV Barrandov on Thursday that should Senator Kubera travel to Taiwan it would impact their „relatively good“ relationship.
Senator Kubera said earlier he would be going to Taiwan on a trade mission. The Senator was previously criticized by China for attending a reception at the Representative Office of Taiwan in Prague, and responded by saying China must get used to the fact that the Czech Republic was a sovereign state which would not be pushed around.

The number of ATM machines in the Czech Republic increased in the first half of 2019 to 5461, according to the Bank Card Association. With 471 ATM machines per one million users, the Czech Republic is still lagging behind the EU average of 841.
Czechs withdrew CZK 46.8 million in 2018, which is 15 million less than in the previous year. The number of cards issued increased by 430,000 to 12.24 million.
The country’s first ATM machine was unveiled 30 years ago at a branch of the then Czech State Savings Bank on Wenceslas Square.

Czech consumers are predicted to spend around CZK 800 million on Black Friday this year, which is around 250 percent more than on a regular Friday and a 25 percent increase on the previous year.
The peak of the Christmas shopping frenzy is expected on December 10, when sales are likely to reach over one billion crowns.
According to an analysis carried out by the company Shoptet, providing a platform for around 50 percent of the country’s online stores, some 450,000 Czechs will shop on Black Friday, spending on average CZK 900.

Despite a relatively humid and rainy November, some areas in the Czech Republic are still suffering from drought, according to the website InterSucho, which is mapping the current state of drought in the country.
South Bohemia and part of the Pilsen region are the worst affected, with the registered lack of moisture reaching into the deeper layers of soil in places.
According to a long-term weather forecast, precipitation in the next few days should be below-average for this time of year.

A group of opposition MPs have called on the Czech government and President Miloš Zeman to appeal to China to end the violation of human rights and the persecution and killing of political prisoners.
According to the initiator of the petition, Christian Democrat MP Vít Kaňkovský, religious and ethnic minorities in China are being persecuted, and the Czech Republic, as the country’s trade and diplomatic partner, has to face the problem.
Deputies from the opposition Christian Democratic party, the Party of Mayors and Independents and the Civic Democratic Party want to discuss the resolution in the lower house next week.

Škoda Auto’s latest version of the best-selling Octavia model will be sold on the Czech market for CZK 456,000, the Czech News Agency wrote on Thursday. The starting price of the liftback is 6,000 crowns higher than the price of the previous model.
The basic liftback model will only be available in mid-2020, while the fourth-generation Octavia Combi model, which will cost an extra CZK 180,000 is set to go on sale before the end of the year.
