    The Czech Republic’s foreign trade surplus fell by CZK 2.4 billion year on year in January to CZK 15.1 billion, data published on Monday by the statistical office show.

    The drop stemmed mainly from imports of computer, electronic and optical equipment, and refined petroleum products. Car exports remained robust, the office said.

    The Czech trade balance with EU member states ended in a surplus of CZK 72.6 billion. The trade deficit with non-EU countries deepened by CZK 2.3 billion to CZK 56.1 billion.

    The Czech unemployment rate dropped to 3 percent in February, after rising slightly for two consecutive months, the Labour Office announced on Monday.

    The number of jobseekers dropped nearly 3,000 to 227,369, the lowest number since February 1997.

    In the Prague region, unemployment stood at 1.9 percent, as usual the lowest level in the country. The Moravian-Silesian region had the highest level of unemployment at 4.6 percent.

    Czech tennis player Marie Bouzková has lost her first ever final on the WTA circuit. The 21-year-old lost 5-7 6-4 4-6 to number one seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in a three-hour battle in the final of the Monterrey Open in Mexico.

    Bouzková, a past junior US Open winner, has now climbed to 47 in the world rankings, her first time in the top 50.

    New measures aimed at combating the spread of the new coronavirus were introduced in the Czech Republic on Monday morning. Police, fire and customs officer have begun carrying out random temperature tests of drivers at 10 border crossings. Information leaflets in Czech, German English are being handed out to motorists entering the country.

    The Czech News Agency reported that general practitioners could expect full waiting rooms on Monday as people following government guidelines returned after the weekend from holidays in Italy.

    The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Czech Republic stands at 32. The minister of health, Adam Vojtech, said 141 people had been tested for the infection on Sunday out of a total of nearly 1,000. The country’s first three coronavirus cases were announced eight days ago.

    A group of five Czechs died in an avalanche in the Dachstein Mountains in Austria on Sunday morning. The Austrian police confirmed that the victims were all from the Czech Republic, a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague told the Czech News Agency.

    The avalanche occurred at 9:30 at an altitude of 2800 metres. Mountain rescue teams, police and several helicopters were dispatched to the scene.

    The Czech prime minister, Andrej Babiš, says the authorities in Italy should ban the country’s citizens from travelling abroad in view of its coronavirus crisis. Speaking in an interview for Czech Television on Sunday, Mr. Babiš said that he was not convinced that the Rome government’s decision to make 16 million people in the north of Italy stay home was a sufficient measure and that it was unclear whether the infection would only affect those under mass quarantine.

    The Italian prime minister ordered around a quarter of the country’s population to stay at home after 1,200 fresh cases of Covid-19 were registered in just 24 hours. Over 230 people have died of the infection in Italy.

    The unseasonably mild weather in the Czech Republic is set to continue for another week, according to a regular four-week forecast issued by the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute.

    Daytime highs are expected to reach around 10 degrees Celsius in the coming week, before then reverting to typical values for the time of year with the next month expected to confirm to long-term averages in both temperature and precipitation, the forecasters said.

    The Czech president, Miloš Zeman, is celebrating seven years in office on Sunday. Several hundred people are expected to attend a concert marking that landmark at Prague Castle’s Riding School entitled My Seventh Year with You. The show will take the form of a tribute to the late pop singer Karel Gott.

    Mr. Zeman’s first term five-year term as head of state began on March 8, 2013.

    The Painted Bird by Václav Marhoul was the big winner at the Czech Lion film awards at Prague’s Rudolfinum on Saturday night. Nominated in 11 categories, the WWII drama won nine prizes, including for best film, best director and best cinematography.

    Jiří Havelka’s Owners, which had the most nominations with 12, picked up awards for best actress, best supporting actress and best screenplay, while Old-Timers by Martin Dušek and Ondřej Provazník, in the running in 10 categories, took the best actor and best supporting actor gongs.
