Over 10,000 tradesmen in the Czech Republic have suspended their business since the beginning of March, which is a 46 percent increase on the previous year, according to a study by the analytical firm Bisnode. The highest number of suspended business was recorded in the food sector and hairdressing.
The rapid increase is attributed to the government preventive measures against Covid-19, which have closed many businesses or cut down the demand for their services. According to Bisnode analyst Petra Štěpánová, people are suspending their businesses in order to be eligible for unemployment benefit or other social support.

Deputy health minister Roman Prymula plans to carry out a blanket screening for coronavirus on a representative sample of Czech population, Czech Radio reported on Wednesday. The aim of the screening is to assess what percentage of Czech population has contracted the Covid-19 disease.
Mr Prymula said he would like to carry out the testing as soon as possible, most likely next week. According to the new head of the country’s Central Crisis Staff, Jan Hamáček, they will use the rapid coronavirus test kits which are based on detecting antibodies against the virus.
Mr Prymula, who is in charge of the new smart quarantine system, also wants to screen all inhabitants of the town of Litovel and its surroundings, which was under full quarantine until Monday due to a high number of registered coronavirus cases.

The Czech Republic’s leading epidemiology expert Roman Prymula has questioned the advice of the WHO regarding the use of facemasks, according to which healthy people only need to wear a mask if they are taking care of a person with suspected COVID 19 infection.
Prymula defended the Czech government’s decision to order the blanket use of face masks by all citizens, saying that the logic behind it was that people wore masks not to protect themselves but others in their vicinity.
The problem is that no one knows who may be infected before they develop symptoms, Prymula said.
He stressed that masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has sharply rejected claims that the cabinet intended to pave the way for legal changes that would weaken the role of Parliament in times of crisis and put more powers in the hands of the government.
The weekly Respekt and the news site Aktualne.cz wrote on Monday that the Defence Ministry is preparing a draft legislation to that effect to be debated by the government in the coming days. According to Defence Minister Lubomir Metnar the government was only to receive suggestions from a group of experts regarding the possibilities of resolving crisis situations. He said the document had been commissioned as a set of guidelines for crisis situations when the government or Parliament were not action capable.
The prime minister reassured politicians and the public that no such document would be discussed saying that the ministry should have known better than to come forward with such an initiative at the present time.
