The Czech Republic plans to support an Italian proposal to suspend the application of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS 1) covering energy, heavy industry and aviation, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said after a government meeting on Monday. The issue is expected to dominate a meeting of the European Council, due to take place in Brussels on March 19–20.
Babiš also wants to propose a price cap and the exclusion of energy-intensive sectors from the system. He added that the Czech Republic would work with other countries to push through what he described as the only effective way to help European industry, especially in view of the impacts of the ongoing Middle East crisis.

As of Monday, the Finance Ministry will receive daily reports on fuel prices from petrol station operators, along with retrospective information covering the previous month.
The ministry has introduced the measure to monitor profit margins and prevent excessive increases following rising oil prices after the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East.
The opposition Civic Democratic Party has proposed temporarily lowering excise duty on fuels because of higher oil prices. Finance Minister Alena Schillerová rejected the proposal, saying it would only reduce state budget revenues without achieving the intended effect.

The Motorists’ party of the ruling coalition plans to propose the introduction of a three-month voluntary military training program for civilians. According to party leader and foreign minister, Petr Macinka, the proposal will now be discussed within the coalition. The three-month training course would combine military and firefighting training, as well as basic topography, advanced first aid, radio communication, and anti-drone operations.
The Freedom and Direct Democracy party (SPD) of the ruling coalition is not opposed to the plan, and the idea of helping boost new recruits for the military has also been welcomed by the Chief of the General Staff, Karel Řehka.
However, the plan is not included in the government’s policy program, and it is unclear whether funding and military personnel would be available to implement it.

President Petr Pavel will meet with Finance Minister Alena Schillerová at Prague Castle on Monday to discuss the state budget for 2026. The budget, with a deficit of 310 billion crowns, was approved by the Chamber of Deputies last week and now awaits the president’s signature to become law. Its adoption would end the provisional budget regime that has limited monthly state spending since the start of the year to one twelfth of last year’s expenditures.
Mr. Pavel said previously that he would not veto the budget, despite his reservations to it. However he wants to discuss with Schillerová whether the proposed deficit complies with the law on budgetary responsibility.
The National Budget Council has repeatedly said the deficit violates the law. Schillerová rejects the claim, arguing that the rules do not apply when the Chamber of Deputies returns the draft budget to the government for revision.

The Czech Republic is prepared to lead a mission to assess the condition of the Druzhba oil pipeline damaged in Russian attacks in Ukraine, Industry Minister Karel Havlíček said in Brussels on Monday.
According to Havlíček, Ukraine should allow a group of European experts to visit the site. He said the Czech Republic is ready to assemble a team of professionals, for example from the state fuel distributor Čepro, capable of evaluating the situation.
Russian oil has not been flowing through the Druzhba pipeline to Slovakia and Hungary since January 27, when Kyiv says it was damaged by a Russian strike. Bratislava and Budapest accuse Ukraine of intentionaly delaying the pipeline’s restoration and attempting to influence Hungary’s parliamentary elections in April, in which Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is fighting to remain in power.

The 2026 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature went to the Czech-Danish co-production Mr. Nobody Against Putin. The film examines the impact of wartime propaganda in Russian schools during Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The footage was shot by Pavel Talankin, a teacher at a Russian primary school, who was tasked with implementing a new wartime education plan that included special lessons and the organization of propaganda events for schoolchildren. Frustrated with the situation, the teacher decided to keep the camera running, documenting not only the state-mandated activities but also everyday life in and around the school. Around the same time he met director David Borenstein, and together they found a way to smuggle the recorded material out of Russia.
The film had its world premiere at the World Cinema Documentary section of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on 25 January, where it won the Special Jury Award. It also won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary.
According to the Czech producers, the award sends a message encouraging people not to be intimidated by lawlessness.

The pop-culture festival Comic-Con Prague attracted more than 28,000 fans over three days, the highest attendance in its seven-year history. This year, the organizers also managed to bring a record number of international and Czech stars.
“The biggest success was certainly enjoyed by Mads Mikkelsen, Billy Boyd, Iain Glen, Robert Llewellyn and Claudia Black, but also Jiří Lábus and Jaroslav Satoranský,” said Pavel Renčín, marketing director of the company Active Radio, which co-organized the event.
According to the organizers, the attendance shows that Comic-Con Prague’s reputation is growing across Europe. “Every year more fans visit us from neighboring countries such as Slovakia, Poland, Germany and Austria, but also from Italy or Spain. The cosplay competitions traditionally received a huge response,” noted the festival’s program director Václav Pravda.

The Czech Republic has a pre-negotiated long-term contract to reserve 1.4 billion cubic meters of gas per year at terminals in the United States. This was told to ČTK and Czech Television by Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček (ANO) after his return from the United States. According to him, the goal is to diversify energy sources and strengthen security.
“The company ČEZ is already discussing the details of the gas reservation contract at this moment. It is clearly a step toward energy security. In this way we will secure 20 to 30 percent of the Czech Republic’s gas consumption,” Havlíček said.

Analysts expect the board of the Czech National Bank to keep its key interest rate unchanged at 3.5 percent at Thursday’s meeting. According to them, the impact of the conflict in Iran on the Czech economy remains limited and does not require a monetary policy response.
The central bank has kept the base rate at 3.5 percent since May last year. Analyst Dominik Kohut from PwC said the bank would likely leave policy unchanged even without the current geopolitical tensions.
