    Police are investigating verbal and physical assaults against two journalists during the anti-government protest outside Czech public television on November 17. One journalist from Aktuálně.cz says he had his phone knocked out of his hand by protesters and someone in the crowd shouted racist insults at a Czech Television reporter. On Friday, the news server Romea.cz drew attention to the incident when it posted a recording made during the protest on its web page.

    Heavy snowfall on Friday night complicated traffic around the country, including Prague. Firefighters were called to a number of incidents caused mainly by the fact that many cars are still running on summer tires. Meteorologists have issued a heavy snow for Saturday as well, with the mountain regions expecting to see up to 15 centimeters of fresh snow. Drivers have been warned to expect icy roads and not to set out without winter gear.

    Some 57 per cent of Czechs plan to spend less on Christmas presents this year, according to a survey conducted by the STEM/MARK agency. Seven out of ten people said they would cover their Christmas expenditures from their regular monthly salary and select mainly cosmetics and books. Only 16 percent of respondents said they planned to buy electronics as presents, down from 34 percent last year.  Forty-three percent of respondents expect to spend up to 5,000 crowns on Christmas presents, while 30 per cent want to buy gifts for up to 10,000 crowns.

    Due to the rising cost of living, 68 percent of manual workers in Prague have had to start moonlighting.  According to the results of a survey conducted by the start-up Grason, this concerns drivers, warehouse workers, salesmen, cooks, waiters and waitresses, who need to earn on average 5,000 to 9,000 crowns a month in addition to their regular income in order to make ends meet. The company connects temps with employers through a mobile app and offers work even for just one shift.

    The Prague Archbishopric is putting Jindřišska Tower, in the centre of Prague, up for sale for 75 million crowns. The tower is part of the historic core of the city which is on the UNESCO list of cultural and natural heritage. The 15th century building is almost 66 metres high and is equipped with an elevator. The ten floors of the tower house a restaurant, souvenir shop, café, gallery and a permanent exhibition. The tower is also used for cultural programs, exhibitions and theatre performances and concerts. The belfry, with its bell Maria from 1518, offers a panoramic view of the Prague skyline.

    Defence Minister Jana Černochová and the Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Army Karel Řehka on Saturday paid an inspection visit to a number of border checkpoints where soldiers are now helping police guard the state border with Slovakia. Police officers and soldiers have engaged in increased border surveillance since the end of September due to the growing number of illegal migrants who are using Czechia as a transit country on their way to Germany. Since the end of September, soldiers and police have detained and registered thousands of illegal migrants as well as a large number of smugglers. The border controls are expected to last until 12 December when the situation will be reviewed.

    Western backers of Ukraine “should not dictate” peace terms to Kyiv and recognise that the country is in effect fighting against Russia to protect all of Europe, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said in an interview for The Guardian. “We shouldn’t be in a position where we dictate to Ukraine, with others, conditions for peace, if they are fighting for their own survival,” Lipavský said, when asked if it was reasonable for Ukraine to demand a restoration of the pre-2014 borders. At stake, the minister added, were the UN principles of territorial integrity and the international rules-based order. “Putin wants to destroy the principle that the borders of states are not changed by brute force,” he argued.

    The weekend is expected to bring the first bout of cold winter weather to Czechia with up to 15 centimeters of snow in places and day temperatures hovering around zero. Temperatures will drop to -7 degrees Celsius at night and drivers have been warned to expect icy conditions.

    The price of fuels in Czechia has been consistently dropping for five weeks now. A liter of the best-selling petrol, Natural 95, is now sold for an average of CZK 41.38, whereas a week ago it was 62 halers more expensive. Diesel is cheaper by CZK 1.50 per liter, now selling for CZK 44.49 per liter on average.
