The 66th International Engineering Fair opens at the main exhibition grounds in Brno on Tuesday. Over the next four days, the venue will host over 1,300 companies from 42 countries, half of them from abroad. The largest delegations are from Germany, Italy, Slovakia, and Switzerland, with strong representation also from technology powerhouses China and Japan.
This year’s key themes are the digitalization and robotization of heavy industry, including the use of artificial intelligence. Organizers say the fair aims to help engineering firms explore new markets and sectors as the traditional automotive industry faces a downturn.
This year’s event runs alongside Transport and Logistics and Envitech, a fair focused on environmental technologies.

The three parties that are negotiating the set-up of the next Czech government — ANO, SPD and the Motorists — have said that they will refuse to introduce the EU’s new carbon emission trading system for households and transport, due to take effect in January 2027.
ANO deputy leader Karel Havlíček told reporters that the future government would immediately notify the European Commission of its decision. Havlíček said the emissions fee was “socially unacceptable,” since it would burden families with thousands of crowns in higher energy and fuel costs. He added that the government would rather risk legal action and fines from Brussels than pass the costs on to citizens.

This year’s judicial pay freeze has been struck down by the Constitutional Court, which on Tuesday annulled the fixed salary base and criticized the government’s repeated “unsystematic interventions.” The state must now retroactively compensate judges, a move the Justice Ministry earlier estimated at over CZK 800 million, plus interest and legal costs. The ministry said it respects the court’s decision and expects the total costs to reach CZK 620 million.
Under the standard calculation, the base salary should have exceeded CZK 130,000, but the government had capped it at CZK 121,685 for 2024 to meet fiscal savings targets — a move many judges called unconstitutional.

After a serious illness, Dana Drábová, the long-serving chairwoman of the State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB), passed away on Monday at the age of 64. She was the longest-serving senior civil servant in the highest position in the Czech Republic. She led the office overseeing the use of nuclear energy in the country for more than a quarter of a century.
Drábová was also active in local politics and public life and was engaged in supporting Ukraine. Politicians, nuclear energy experts, and environmentalists alike praised not only her knowledge and long years of service to the state but also her perspective, directness, and ability to engage in fair discussions even with opponents. Drábová was first appointed head of the State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB) in October 1999 by the then Social Democratic government of Miloš Zeman. Most recently, her mandate was extended two years ago by the current cabinet of Petr Fiala (ODS). The office, among other responsibilities, authorizes the operation of nuclear power plants and other facilities, besides the nuclear blocks in Dukovany and Temelín, it also oversees the safe handling of radiation for about 8,000 other permit holders.
“Dana Drábová did truly exceptional work for the safety of the Czech Republic,” President Petr Pavel responded to her passing. He valued her expertise and admired her directness and charisma. In the past, Drábová received honors from his two predecessors in the presidency. In 2011, President Václav Klaus awarded her the President’s Silver Plaque, and three years later, his successor Miloš Zeman presented her with the Medal of Merit.
Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) described Drábová as an extraordinary woman dedicated to serving the state and its security. Andrej Babiš, leader of the ANO movement, respected Drábová as a great expert. Industry and Trade Minister Lukáš Vlček (STAN) called her an exceptional figure in Czech science and public life. Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský (independent) considered Drábová an outstanding woman who tirelessly worked her entire life for the Czech Republic, its energy security and diplomacy.
