A vivid display of northern lights lit up the Czech Republic on Monday night, visible even from major cities, including Prague, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) reported. The aurora appeared unusually bright in places, with rare, fast-pulsing green “aurora blobs” complementing the typical red hues.
The extraordinary display was caused by a strong influx of protons into Earth’s magnetosphere, and its visibility was enhanced by clear skies across much of the country.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said he hopes the dispute over Greenland can be resolved through diplomacy, speaking in a video posted on social media ahead of his departure for Davos, where he is attending the World Economic Forum. He stressed that Greenland is clearly part of Denmark and noted that, as Denmark and the United States are NATO allies, the issue should be addressed through dialogue. Babiš added that threats are counterproductive and that the matter should be handled through standard diplomatic channels.
US President Donald Trump has been pressuring Denmark to relinquish Greenland and has threatened to impose 10 per cent tariffs on several European countries from early February over their support for Copenhagen.
Babiš said he expects progress to be made during discussions in Davos, which will also be attended by Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
He also commented on his recent purchase of a globe, which drew online jokes, explaining that Greenland appears larger than it actually is on flat maps.

The Czech Republic’s long-standing friendship with Israel will continue and strengthen under the current government, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motorists’ Party) said after meeting his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa’ar in Prague. Macinka also renewed the mandate of the ministry’s envoy for Holocaust affairs, interfaith dialogue and freedom of religion, Robert Řehák, whose scope will now also include combating antisemitism.
Macinka recalled that Sa’ar was the first foreign minister he spoke to by phone after taking office in December, describing it as a sign of continuity. Tuesday’s talks focused on developments in the Czech Republic and the Middle East, including Iran. “We share many common views and have much to build on,” he said.
Sa’ar described the Czech Republic as one of Israel’s closest friends and allies, particularly since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023. He said bilateral relations could reach a new level under the new Czech government, welcomed the coalition programme’s commitment to continuity in ties with Israel, and invited Czech politicians to visit Jerusalem.

The annual Šediváčkův Long dog sled race gets under way this evening in Deštné in the Orlické Mountains. Considered one of the toughest dogsledding events in Europe, the race has attracted more than 100 competitors from 12 countries.
Most are mushers racing with dog sleds, while others compete on cross-country skis with one or two dogs, or on fat-tyre mountain bikes.
The main course covers more than 300 kilometres over five stages. A shorter, four-stage route measures 200 kilometres. Racers are expected to reach the finish on Saturday.
Because of a thaw, organisers moved parts of the course to higher elevations, where around 30 centimetres of snow remain.

The Czech Republic has not yet received an official invitation to join the proposed Peace Council being set up by US President Donald Trump, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka said on Monday after talks in Prague with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó.
Macinka also reiterated the Czech position on Greenland, saying the country supports a diplomatic solution. Szijjártó said he does not consider the issue an EU matter and sees no need for a joint statement from the bloc.
The Peace Council is intended to support stability and peace in conflict zones, initially focusing on Gaza. According to Reuters and AP, countries that have expressed interest include Hungary, Vietnam and several Central Asian states, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has already received an invitation.

Leaders of the governing coalition have agreed to abolish licence fees for public Czech Television and Czech Radio and to adjust the timetable for changing their financing. Lower house Speaker and Freedom and Direct Democracy leader Tomio Okamura announced the decision after a meeting of coalition leaders on Monday.
Okamura said the abolition of fees is part of the government’s policy programme, and work is under way on legislation to introduce a new funding model. According to earlier reports, the coalition plans to replace licence fees with state budget funding from 2027. During a transitional period, it is considering exemptions for certain groups, such as pensioners.
The opposition opposes scrapping the fees, warning that the move could undermine the independence of public service media.

Scientists have discovered a 15,000-year-old Ice Age engraving in a cave in the Moravian Karst, marking the first evidence of prehistoric cave art found in Czechia.
The engraving shows the head and neck of a horse and was found on a limestone block in the Švédův stůl cave. The discovery was made by an international team led by researchers from the Czech Academy of Sciences.
Dating to the late Magdalenian period, the find suggests that figurative cave art was not limited to western Europe. The results of the research have been published in the Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology.
