US president appreciates information from Czech intelligence
US president George W. Bush has appreciated good cooperation between US and Czech intelligence services. He welcomed especially information about suspected terrorist Muhammad Atta in the Czech Republic. Bush received Czech Prime Minister Milos Zeman late on Friday to discuss fight against terrorism and the upcoming NATO summit due to take place in Prague in 2002. The summit will be crucial for further expansion of the North-Atlantic Alliance.
Zeman: Atta planned to destroy RFE building in Prague
Earlier, Mr. Zeman told CNN that terrorist Mohammed Atta, a suspected pilot in the September attacks on the United States, discussed plans to blow up the Radio Free Europe building in Prague when he met an Iraqi agent there earlier this year. Zeman said that there were some plans to use a truck loaded with standard explosives to destroy the building. The U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe, which has its headquarters in the Czech capital, broadcasts news and other programs to several countries, including Iraq. Earlier this month, the head of the Czech secret service said the radio station was of great interest to Iraqi intelligence, but did not elaborate.
Polish gangster arrested in Czech Republic
The Czech police have arrested one of two kingpins of Poland's notorious "Proszkow" mafia group. The suspect, identified only as Edward S., alias "Daddy", disappeared in May after he was sentenced to seven years in prison in connection with an extortion conviction.
Italian WWI soldiers commemorated in Milovice
Representatives of the Czech army and the Italian embassy in Prague, as well as local officials on Saturday commemorated more than 5000 Italian soldiers who died in the Czech lands during World War I. The solemn ceremony took place in Milovice, some 30 kilometres East of Prague, where most of the soldiers died in a prison camp. Italy commemorates its dead soldiers around the 4th of November which is the Day of Italian Military.
Most Czechs approve of nuclear energy
According to a recent opinion poll, most Czechs approve of nuclear power stations. A survey conducted by the Taylor Nelson Sofres Factum agency, 72 percent of respondents said they supported the use of nuclear energy while 26 percent were against. The poll also showed that most people favour water, gas and nuclear energy to production of electricity from oil or coal.
