New Year’s Eve celebrations muted
The New Year’s Eve celebrations were muted around the Czech Republic, due to the coronavirus restrictions in force.
Czechs saw the New Year in under a state of emergency and a night curfew between 9pm and 5 am which ruled out the traditional street parties and outdoor events.
Approximately 80 people gathered on Wenceslas Square in the evening to protest against the government restrictions. The police dispersed the assembly and briefly detained two protesters who were aggressive.
Similar, though smaller, events took place in Brno, Ostrava and Olomouc, where around twenty people gathered.
