Minor earthquake recorded in Pisek Region

Seismic monitoring stations recorded a 3.1 magnitude earthquake in the vicinity of Mirotice in the Pisek Region on Thursday evening. The tremors were felt in the wider vicinity of the epicentre with the locals reporting sounds reminiscent of loud thunder during a storm, the rumbling of tanks, ground shaking and rattling of glass objects. Earthquakes of this magnitude rarely occur in this area.

Due to its geotectonic structure, the Czech Republic has relatively weak seismic activity, which is limited to the peripheral parts of the Bohemian Massif. Ground shaking is most frequent in the Cheb and Sokolov regions and, with few exceptions, causes no damage.
