Miloš Vystrčil re-elected as Senate speaker
Miloš Vystrčil of the Civic Democrats, who has been the Speaker of the Senate since February 19, was re-elected into the position this Wednesday after receiving 73 out of the total 77 votes.
The vote was necessary after the recent Senate elections, which saw a significant strengthening of the Mayors and Independents party. There was speculation about whether the party will try to secure the position for one of its members. However, in the end, the various factions within the Czech upper-house agreed on Mr. Vystrčil keeping his position and he ended up being the only candidate being proposed during the vote this Wednesday.
Mr. Vystrčil thanked his fellow members for their trust in his acceptance speech and highlighted the importance of the Senate remaining an independent body.
Jiří Růžička and Jan Horník from the Mayors and Independents, along with Jiří Oberfalzer from the joint Civic Democrat-TOP 09 club and Jitka Seitlová of the Christian Democrats were elected as deputy speakers.
