Marshal Konev and astronaut Valentina Tereshkova stripped of honorary citizenship
Prague councilors have approved a document proposing that Soviet Marshall Ivan Konev, who led the Red Army forces during the liberation of Prague from Nazi occupation, be stripped of his honorary citizenship of Prague. According to the document the decision is taken in connection with the Soviet marshal’s repressive role within the Communist bloc in the decades that followed, for instance his part in suppressing the Hungarian uprising in 1956 and the building of the Berlin Wall. The decision still needs to be endorsed by the Prague City Assembly.
Marshal Konev’s statue was removed from its place in Prague 6 some time ago for the same reason, following mounting criticism from the public.
Meanwhile, the city council in České Budějovice has moved to strip Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova of her honorary citizenship due to the fact that she officially supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
